Several times I encountered depression, in which almost the most pronounced symptom was difficulty making decisions. It is interesting that sometimes people before a depressive episode were not at all indecisive; on the contrary, they were in charge of all family problems - and suddenly, against the background of depression, even the simplest decisions, like whether or not to take a child to a circle, became a big problem. In addition, after making a decision, a person began to be tormented by endless rumination about the fact that an imperfect decision had been made. Why does this happen? The fact is that in depression, thinking changes significantly. The mental filter is tuned to the negative, and as a result, the person becomes much more fixated on the negative aspects of each situation than on the positive ones. If a decision is made, each option has its pros and cons. Normally, both are taken into account, but in depression a person is mainly fixated on the minuses. It is always easier to choose between good and good than between bad and bad. Moreover, in the second case, any choice ultimately turns out to be bad. It is difficult for a person to switch to the good that the choice brought; he thinks about the shortcomings of the decision made and what was lost along with the rejected option. I will either buy this dress and, as a result, lose money that could be spent on something more useful, I will be a spender, or I won’t buy it - but I will be left without a dress, and when else will I find such a good one? I’ll either go on a visit - but I’ll be bored there, people don’t make me happy as before, I’ll be inappropriate with my depression, I’ll only spoil everyone’s mood, or I’ll stay at home - well, I don’t even go to visit anymore, in general, life is monotonous and meaningless. If in a normal state a person makes a decision, and when it is irreversible, then he, as a rule, takes it for granted and calms down, trying to pay more attention to the positive aspects of his choice, then in depression it is very difficult for a person to come to terms with losses and imperfection . At the same time, a depressed person tends to blame himself for imperfections. Self-blame is common in depression, and when making decisions, it can take the form of endless rumination about what was done wrong.
