Childhood traumatization includes several types of abuse: - physical; - sexualized; - emotional (psychological); - neglect of needs. It is usually believed that everything is clear with the first two points. But in reality, for many, the boundaries are blurred. For example, abuse includes spanking, slapping, standing in a corner or on hard objects, etc. Moreover, such “upbringing” is considered normal by 68% of Russians (2019). It’s not even about when abuse is the result of a parent’s emotional dysregulation, but about the fact that it is considered the norm of upbringing. The second point is more complicated - it includes not only physical impact, but also any actions of a sexual nature - involvement, demonstration, etc. d. Completely blurry with the last two points. Psychological violence includes name-calling, humiliation, threats, intimidation, refusal to talk, and being locked in a room. Neglect is often not considered at all in the ordinary sense as abuse, but it is no less traumatic - it is the ignoring of the needs for safety, nutrition, education, care, attention, emotional development. In 1996, WHO named adverse childhood experiences a leading health problem. In addition, cited a number of studies, I will give only some conclusions. The strongest connection was found between childhood trauma and drug use, the likelihood of entering into violent (abusive) relationships, self-violent behavior. There are also strong connections with risky and impulsive behavior, mental disorders, eating disorders, and alcoholism. Moderate connections with smoking, heart disease, and general health. There is evidence from neurophysiological studies that childhood abuse affects the maturation of brain structures. There is a smaller size of the hippocampus, corpus callosum, amygdala, and the prefrontal cortex matures more slowly. Researchers now say that abuse in childhood should be recognized as one of the main factors of morbidity and premature mortality in adulthood.
