What am I living for? I sincerely believe that any therapy should begin with this question. Not directly, of course, but internally. There must be a deep feeling of the presence of meaning in my life, otherwise why do everything at all? I know that many experts will not agree with me, traditionally psychology proceeds from the opposite: from small to large. First we “treat” neuroses, personality disorders, etc. and only then do we approach deep existential questions. Like, you can’t run away from yourself, you can’t escape human (or animal, according to some) nature, first feed your body, solve simple questions, and then fly away to higher spheres. And for some this is true. In certain personality disorders, we are dealing with an avoidant type of behavior, including avoidance of real life. In such cases, a person can really “elude” from solving important, pressing issues by entering another reality. But such cases are extremely rare. For the most part, people, on the contrary, elude global and important topics precisely because they are too important and it is unbearably difficult to face them. I believe that everything is just the opposite. The “unbearable heaviness of existence” is associated precisely with the lack of meaning in life. Lostness, lack of clarity of guidelines and goals in life is precisely a problem in itself. Then relationships, work, and self-perception are severely tested or become a test in themselves. Irvin Yalom beautifully described this search in his works, filled with life, compassion and clear light. There is an expression: “When there is a why, the how is clear.” Or is it just a matter of time and technique of achievement. Meaning ennobles a person, elevates life, gives fullness of sensations and perceptions, fills even the simplest and most ordinary things. To tell you a secret, most people have and know their meaning in life. They may not be able to immediately formulate it in words, but they definitely have the feeling that they are not living in vain. This is the main indicator: “I just feel alive!”, “I feel in my place”, “I feel “at ease/in my skin””, “Simple things make me happy, I live meaningfully” etc. The suffering is not that I am going through some kind of pain, but that I don’t see the point in it! When I don’t understand why, for what, why...? Therefore, I always “catch” the deep meaning of the client’s experiences in the field, and transfer this power back to the person, one might say, I, as a facilitator, return and strengthen what the person already has There is. If the meaning is lost, then this is always felt as the most important problem - this is an emptiness that the client tries in every possible way to fill with one or another problem. It is also necessary to mention that everyone has their own meaning. I don’t think there is one truth for everyone, maybe so. But I do not presume to claim to be a prophet. Therefore, in field work, the meaning and value of a person’s life is his/her own. Nothing that is imposed from the outside will have power in a person’s life until it is accepted. Therefore, everyone seeks and finds their deepest meanings of existence, which may not even be expressed in words, but are clearly and clearly felt as the fullness of being. And I will never dare to dispute this. This is the most intimate thing a person can have. Never destroy the deep self-awareness of the value of life - this is the main motto of humanity, in my opinion. But it is also true that meanings change, grow and transform with us, and what was important yesterday may be an empty ideology today. Therefore, do not be afraid to check and “shaken” your meanings from time to time. It is important! If they still serve you, give you energy for life, charge you to move forward - hold on to them. If they pull you down, “de-energize” or “smell like rot”, discard them in order to set out again for new meanings. Maybe the search for meaning is the most important meaning😊If you want to “put everything in its place”, deal with your meanings and find your!
