Once a young woman, 27 years old, came to me. She was the mother of a 5 year old boy. The woman herself had a higher education, worked in a newspaper and wrote articles. She was very worried that in recent months her son had begun to experience a fear of the dark. Before this, the situation was good and the child did not experience fear of the dark. The boy was most afraid of dark corners in his room, because he believed that something was unclean there. As usually happens, simple persuasion of the child so that he would not be afraid did not bring any results. As far as I know, many parents try to explain to their child, who has begun to be afraid of something, the meaninglessness of his fears and worries. Adults often forget that when they are also afraid of something (a situation at work or somewhere else), simple logical explanations do not produce results. It is pointless to influence a person, adult or small, teenager or elderly, using logic. This method is very good for just wasting time. Fear is something that manifests itself on an unconscious level, we can understand that darkness or something else will not kill us or cause us physical pain, but this will not stop us from being afraid of it. Fear should also be fought through the unconscious. However, let's return to the woman. She told me that when she was little, she was also afraid of the dark. Her father sometimes punished her in a not very humane way, he locked her in a dark bathroom and she tried to find at least a small ray of light somewhere. Then she could not sleep for a long time without light. Then, over time, this fear went away for her. Despite all this, this woman’s son was not punished in this way and he grew up in very comfortable conditions. Many experts would try to find the cause of fear, but is it really that important? We can find out, for example, that a person began to stutter because he was scared by a dog or something else. But is it really because this is found out that a person will stop stuttering? Finding the cause and the culprits often makes no sense. This is usually a waste of the specialist’s time and the client’s money. But still, these arguments again move us away from the young mother and her child. Like any other 5-year-old child, the boy was suggestible, by the way, just like his mother. I told my mom what she needed to do. I told her to take a blank sheet of paper and explain to her son: “This is a blank sheet of paper and it’s not just clean, it can absorb all the unclean things that may live in the corners of your room and that scares you, we will do everything.” to get rid of this while we get rid of this, and you can stop being afraid, very soon.” Throughout the whole day, mother and child had to play and do various things together. When it starts to get dark, they will need to take a clean sheet of paper and go to each corner in the child’s room to collect everything unclean from there. When it gets dark, they will need to sneak to all the corners with a flashlight and also collect the “remains” of everything unclean. On this night, the child will have to stay overnight in the room with the parents, and leave the sheet in the baby’s room. In the morning, the sheet will need to be taken from the room and burned outside. All instructions have been followed. The child stopped being afraid of the dark and immediately began to sleep well. “Most of our life is determined by the unconscious” Doctor of Medicine M. Erikson Sazykin A.A.
