doogie1 (289hp) Not my car, but my mother's (base model 2012 528i). I wasn't with her, but she was driving down the road about 30 minutes from our house and said the car turned off while driving and wouldn't start. I went for help and it wouldn't start at all or even start. It still had power, but it would go off and come back every now and then. Had jumper cables and couldn't jump the car. It ended up having to be towed to our house. I bought a new battery and coded it but it still doesn't work. I scanned the codes and wrote them all down. I wrote down two and a half pages of codes. 80% of them had something to do with electricity, such as: B. high undervoltage in the DSC or something with the driver's door, the mirror or a headlight. Hopefully someone can help. Thanks!

130587 (602hp) You don't give enough information. There are a number of situations in which the car will be switched off for protection. For the same reasons it tends to go into emergency mode. If it's beyond your capabilities (no offense), you should have it checked professionally. If you don't want to go to a dealer, you can find an Indy here. www.bimrs.org

captnbeer (943hp) Hi guys, some oil is dripping on the catalytic converter and causing a burning smell for a few minutes. I suspect it's the valve cover, but I think I'd ask and make sure. A small puddle forms at the rear left of the engine and drips directly onto the cat. If I just spray some brake cleaner there, it takes about 2-3 days for the problem to come back. The oil level does not drop and there are no other problems. The car is a 535i with 85,000 miles of regular service. I use 5W30 and add a quart of Dura lubricant every time I change my oil. Did you change the entire valve cover assembly or just the gasket???

sergik (25hp) Valve cover gasket. With the mileage you have, I would recommend doing the entire valve cover for a permanent repair.

MOOIE (183hp) How many hours do you think it would take? I'm tech savvy but have never done valve cover work. Do you recommend using OEM products or are the aftermarket models also OK? All social tools?

donttouch (76hp) Also, look at your oil filter housing gasket while you're at it, as my gasket was leaking onto the belt, which could have been a costly repair if I hadn't fixed it

whatever09 (148hp) Valve cover/valve gasket repair and repair on an F10 535i costs 5.5 hours per KSD. Factory seals and gaskets ONLY, unless you want to replace them first for practice.

kotovam85 (63hp) Definitely valve cover gasket! If your valve cover assembly is not cracked, you can only replace the valve cover gasket. Go to BMW OEM for all seals. The last time I used a Victor Reinz VCG on my son's 335i it was a total mistake and I had to redo the whole job three times. Don't forget to tighten all valve cover bolts to 8.5 Nm torque in a crazy crisscross pattern starting at the back of the valve cover (where the leak was detected).).

300483 (541hp) It is not advisable to do the seal only at your mileage. Take this from someone who does this for a living... The valve cover should be replaced as it ages for a few reasons. First, it's plastic and it breaks. Sometimes it's cracked, which is why it's leaking, and other times re-torquing causes it to crack, or better yet, it stays fine for a few weeks and then cracks...requiring significant re-repair Additional effort. The valve cover has an integrated crankcase breather valve and the membranes don't last forever. I'm seeing more and more N55 valve covers that squeak because of a broken valve. Save yourself the hassle and do it the best way the first time. Replace the valve cover as a complete unit. The new cover comes with the gasket and the Valvetronic seal.

I need to replace my valve cover gasket that I purchased for $500 and my oil filter housing. I'm thinking about making the oil filter housing myself and saving myself the money. But what advice would you give me for the valve cover gasket? I'll have a mechanic do it for me. I guess he's been working on BMWs for a while

11091985 (556hp) I literally just went through this, but it actually got to the point where I was blowing smoke through my vents. I moved back to NYC from Houston and drove the car there with no problems. I ended up replacing the valve cover, gasket, walnut jet valves, all spark plugs and an injector. I'm not sure if it's the spark plugs or the walnut beam, but the car runs smoother and seems more responsive. I paid 2000 for everything, all OEM parts. I thought about retrofitting the cover but saw nothing but horror stories. If you have not already done so, prepare to service the water pump, tensioner, and belts as these are maintenance items that are pending. I had oil leaks from my oil filter housing onto my belts so I replaced them with tensioners as it was a bit cheaper overall. I'm at 96k now and owe about 5k on the car so I'm going to keep it as an add on for a while in hopes I can afford a GTR soon lol

finger11 (4hp) Hi guys, my car is a 2012 F10 with 17.5k miles. Today when I turned off the engine and opened the engine compartment just to check the coolant level etc. I noticed these strange fumes. If you look closely in the video, you can see the air moving near the engine base. I'm not sure what the cause is. Has anyone ever experienced something like this? We look forward to any help! Thanks!

privs (991hp) Also to give some background, nothing on the car has been replaced yet other than the engine mount, water pump, air filter, oil filter and rear brake pads. Due to the car's low mileage, everything else comes from the factory, including the oil seals.

04121990 (774hp) Hot air rises and you can see the heat waves. Have you ever looked at hot asphalt in the distance? You can see the same waves. I didn't see anything, but if you see distorted air rising, I would suspect it's just very hot air rising.

51286700 (781hp) Hello everyone, thank you for all the valuable information here. I read a lot when I owned my 550xi. Last week the opportunity presented itself to me and I decided to get a new car for the stable. I still remained part of the BMW family and ended up with a low mileage 16 M3. The 550xi was sold and shipped to the new buyer. I would like to once again thank all members who took part in answering my questions. Thank you again for your valued support!

tweety21 (41hp) Hi guys, I was wondering about purchasing a Ceramic iDrive Touch Controller for my 2011 BMW 535i xdrive. Is it possible to code it to work and what is the difference between buying a used controller on eBay for under $400 and installing and purchasing this controller? and have it coded: https://www.bimmer-tech.net/shop/bmw...oller-retrofit Is the upgrade also worth it for my 2011 BMW? I know it's getting old, but I only have 77,000 miles on it and plan on keeping it for a while

070282 (96hp) This is not compatible with your 2011 with CIC head unit. For it to work you need an NBT main unit.

198818 (40hp) Hi everyone, I recently did a really nice install on my dashcam, connecting it to the fuse box in the trunk using a piggyback fuse. I used fuse #147, which is the cigarette lighter fuse rated at 15 amps. It seems that this fuse is always on because when I get in the car it tells me that the battery has unexpectedly discharged. Can anyone recommend a fuse to plug into the trunk that will turn off when I lock the car? Thanks

JensM (812hp) After a long trip with my 535i. I went outside to buy something and left my child in the vehicle. When I got back I realized I can only access the radio through the dashboard. The idrive controller doesn't work. All other functions on the screen remain hidden. Only the radio function works. No guarantee.

Thanks, I used a cigarette lighter socket located under the glove box (in the passenger footwell) in my 2011 F10 for the dash cam. Some models were equipped with this option. Check if your car is equipped with it and maybe you can use it to wire the dash cam. It only stays HOT for about 10 minutes after the car is turned off. And I never got the “Unexpected battery drain” message. Also, I somehow thought that all cigarette lighters in F10/F11 turn off about 10 minutes after a car turns off. I think that's not the case if your setup continues to consume power.

angel29 (886hp) I'm thinking about getting a 2016 CPO F10 (I loved my 2013 535i that I had two years ago and have been driving a 2011 G37 Sport since I waited for my insurance rates to go down). One I'm considering is a 535i M-Sport with 20k miles ($39k) and one is a 550i M-Sport with 31.5k miles ($38k). Both have a gray/black interior and are similarly equipped...M-Sport, Premium, Drivers Assistance Plus, luxury seats, HK stereo, Sirius, Nav, blah blah blah, and the 550i has Executive+ lighting packages and rear sun visors. So I called my state farm agent with the VIN numbers to get a quote (the same full coverage I have now) and was told the 535i would be $813 for 6 months and the 550i would only be $634 for 6 months.. . I'm not complaining As for the price, I find this very surprising as I assumed the V8 would be more expensive. Has anyone else experienced this? (Yes, I'm aware of possible problems with V8, but it's an N63tu and I have a few years of warranty under CPO, so I thought I'd go for it. I do my own maintenance anyway (have a set of quick jacks) so not so much for me to maintain it.)

amber69 (333hp) Your agent explains this better: There are more variables than just the number of cylinders. Age, marital status as examples.

03041977 (681hp) Yes, I called and asked. They couldn't tell me. I guess I have the same age and marital status on both cars, so I don't think that's all there is to it. All I could think of was fewer 550i's on the road and mostly old (middle aged?) farts like me driving them because they are more expensive and therefore have lower accident rates compared to 535i's which are far more common.

dusty12 (270hp) I'll let my wife take care of it

071188 (594hp) Yes, my wife also pays car insurance. She thought the 550i would be better because it had less insurance. That wasn't a hard sell.

miyvarxar (61hp) My wife finally got tired of run-flats and asked me to put on a traditional all-season radial tire. I chose the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Perfect all-season tire for your 13' 535X. I decided to change the stance a bit and went with 10mm front spacers and 15mm rear spacers based on some threads from this forum. They fit perfectly. The top edges of the tires are perfectly aligned with the fender lines at both the front and rear, and the car rides and steers beautifully. As always, excellent advice from this group. Also completely changes the look of the car.

midnight10 (504hp) I believe these wheels came with the car, but they are not very common. It's a shame, because they seem to have more style than the other 18 wheels, which are painted entirely in silver. Is this bike equipped with a special luxury line option??

These are the 19 inch wheels on the BMW 453. I believe there were optional wheels on the 14-16 535. They were installed by the dealer on my wife's first 535. When she bought this one, we kept the wheels and put them on the new car. They look much better in person than in pictures. They are among the most beautiful rims from BMW ever.

apple18 (358hp) I was determined to buy an F30 335i sedan as I have a wife and our three children (7, 2 and 1 year old. Lord help me). In any case, I'm worried that the 335i might realistically be too small. I then considered a 535i, but nothing I read seemed to really praise the car. It seems that the engine of such a big car makes you want more. Then comes the 550i. I've only read horror stories about their reliability, but after a little more research the LCI 550i seems to be more reliable. How true that is or not, I'm not sure. But what I would like to have is a fast BMW 5 Series, but with decent reliability. I'm a wrench driver at home, always working on my cars and it seems the 335i is a friend to someone like that. The LCI 550i is just as easy to work with??

Is working with the LCI 550i just as easy? We have TWO 535i's, a 2012 base and a 2014 M-Sport. I'm not a child racer and have never had a desire for more power. The 6 gives the 8 to 60 mph half a second time, barely a blink of an eye. The 2012 has over 83,000 miles and only required a valve cover gasket and an oil filter housing gasket, both of which are covered by the CPO warranty. I couldn't be happier with any of the 5s. In my opinion, the inline-six 5 Series is the sweet spot in BMW's lineup. Sure, there isn't the back seat I've read about the V8, but I'd never have the opportunity to use all that power outside of a drag strip anyway! When it comes down to it, our 2012 averaged 31+ on its 3,100+ mile road trip and the 2014 averaged 32+ on a 5,600+ mile road trip. My wife's lead foot reaches about 18 for 99% city driving. In my opinion the 3 will be way too small for 3 kids...ESPECIALLY as they get bigger! I thought about a 3 until our first vacation in the 5th. There was no way there would have been enough room for the luggage that 2 1/2 (the 1/2 was my mother-in-law who is a light packer) people needed for the 10 day trip. We took a 16 day trip last year (just the two of us) and there was just enough room for my wife's things. A Costco trip would also be interesting 3.

200592 (312hp) I suggest you both drive so you can make a decision. Agree that the 6 is very strong. For me, the V8 experience isn't just about pure acceleration, it also feels different in the way the power is delivered. However, it's hard to go wrong with the N55 535 and a test drive should help you figure out if it's right for you.

dbrnjhjdbx (669hp) So I started with a 128i... just as a fun car for the weekend. The 5 series rear seats are about the same size as the X1, the front seats are much better than any I've ever had except the X5... Maybe that raises more questions for you lol

basketcase (34hp) I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about the 535i's performance. You might be thinking about it 528?

1234567i (969hp) My '13 535i is the first car I've ever owned that gives me more power than I need. I almost never use the “Sport” engine mode because there is a lot of performance in comfort. You know how some idiots on the interstate block the left lane and speed up when you try to pass them on the right? With this car you have no chance. By the time they realize I'm driving by, my car has gone from 80 (or whatever speed) to over 100 mph in about a second. All you can do is watch me walk by. Drive a 535, I think you'll like it. Heck, even Consumer Reports likes it in the current issue. Good luck.

topnotch1 (134hp) Stopsign32v from the svtperformance boards?! Both N63 and N63TUs attack and consume oil. Seems like the ones with the reman motors should be there. Either way, just get a warranty and enjoy the performance

renault19 (108hp) In my search, I noticed the pattern that the vast majority of the N63TU's critics have never owned one. People who have actually owned vehicles with N63TU all seemed to have very positive experiences. 550 seems to be used interchangeably with N63 by many posters, so you need to be specific in your search and make sure the model years are mentioned. Personally, I own a 2015 550 with N63TU that has now covered up to 80,000 miles and only requires basic maintenance. I had to replace two wheels because of potholes, but that's not the engine's fault. The F10's rear seats don't offer much legroom if you have the comfort seat option as they are very large. Maybe you would consider the 750 as another option for more space if you don't want an X5, just a thought

folk74 (659hp) I agree with philipm785, it's best to test drive both and decide for yourself. I also tried both 535 and LCI 550, the decision was easy for me, but everyone is different. Of course the 550 is significantly faster than a 535, but that's only part of the equation. For me, the big appeal of the 550 was that it moved the car much more effortlessly with less throttle, which I think really enriches the luxury cruiser experience.

alex44 (163hp) I never wanted an SUV either, which is partly why I switched back to a sedan. But trust me when I say that a 335 is going to be a waste of money for so many people, especially in the long run.

211095 (528hp) 335gt. I did that.

sat (952hp) You might also want to consider a 2011-12 E90 M3 sedan. It has a naturally aspirated engine and is considered one of the most reliable cars in BMW's modern lineup. I know two people who own them, one a sedan and the other a coupe. Great cars. I prefer my F10 as a daily driver, but I'm also pretty boring

InspireSiR (84hp) Opt for the 535i with M-Sport and get a JB4 for $579. This will make it feel like a 335i when accelerating. Get the M5 Competition Package front sway bar (around $350-400) and I believe it was the Hotchkis rear sway bar which I also had. This eliminates the floaty ride so it doesn't corner like a Buick (even with M Sport sway). Get rid of the run-flats and buy some decent summer tires. Enjoy. (Also get some Akebono pads as the original pads are dirty as hell).

crystal7 (622hp) I have my 2011 550i, 6-speed manual transmission. Almost 115,000 miles on the clock. I've owned it for 73,000 miles and loved it. Admittedly I replaced the spark plugs, filters, upgraded coil packs, 90 degree Celsius thermostat, JB4, Catless DPS, upgraded X5M front brakes, new rear brakes and M5 bumper. Lots and lots of space but I don't have any kids...yet lol. I love the power delivery and the sound it makes.....ughhhhhh. But admittedly I'm a mechanic and do my own work. The only major work I did was on the valve seals (and associated gaskets, separators and other top end seals). At about 100,000 miles. It used to use a quart of oil every 1,500 to 2,000 miles. To this point, with almost 15,000 miles and an oil change at 6,500 miles, I have ZERO fuel consumption. I got 8.5 liters out of my 9 liter initial fill from the pan during my first oil change. The consumption of 0.5 liters is amazing at 6500 miles, so I consider it zero consumption. But...I think I have a unicorn. I see a lot of terrible stories on the N63 and the Tus. The N55, on the other hand, is a proven engine. BMW has arguably had the best I6 engine on the market since they built it, since they basically started lol. The N54 isn't terrible either, but there are some issues. Nothing like the n63. A JB4 N55 should be just as fast as a stock N63, not to mention the Tu. Get the 535i and mod it. I have a feeling you'll be happier. Reliable, fast and great on gas. Plus, you have a real family. I'd rather spend more time with family than under the hood or at the car dealer and being stressed. If you're handy, the 550i isn't that bad... but just be prepared for the worst if it does come through. And research said vehicle thoroughly and make sure EVERYTHING is taken care of. Instead, check out the index 12 injectors, updated coolant lines, newer stickers on the turbos, let the engine idle for 10 minutes and let off the gas. It is better not to see smoke from the exhaust pipe. If the above criteria are met, this is a good start.

Just a small correction to this comment: all turbo cars use oil and especially modern cars, all cars have brakes, repair costs are insanely expensive these days, even more money for imported German cars.
