DomDK (830hp) | It's true. In the case of MB E class, the reliability of 2004-2009 models was bad... But now the reliability of W212 E class seems to be very good. The impression is that MB and Audi are improving a lot, while BMW remains at the same level in terms of reliability. I really respect BMW, because they push the boundaries of technology.
|
playing (263hp) | IMHO, to be a good car, at least the powertrain must be reliable and rock solid... I understand the problems with electrical devices. However, I cannot tolerate transmission problems. In this sense, BMW is a nice car, but not a good car in my opinion. I give MB more marks in this regard. Good compromise between new technologies and reliability. BMW should step up the game in terms of powertrain reliability.

LOVELOVE (258hp) | I heard that the N20 I4 turbo engine, which in 2012 will be 528i, uses a 1.2 bar boost. In the case of N55, 0.8 bar. Will the N20 be more likely to fail than the N55, due to higher boost pressure? It's GDI + higher turbo boost... I'm afraid the 1st year batch, in particular, will be quite unreliable...
|
hoodrich1 (354hp) | no one knows, you would think they would learn from the previous turbo engine that caused so many problems... but nothing will surprise me, they knew about this fuel pump failure for years and did nothing done to remedy this
|
passion69 (848hp) | There have been no problems with the 1.6 turbo 4 in the Mini S and they have been making it ever since 2007.
|
nehemiah1 (347hp) | In my opinion, the positive thing about BMW is that it is a car of greater engineering, both in the engines and the electronics department, but these are also their weaknesses in terms of reliability. This is where Benz comes in, just enough tech in return it seems like a more reliable car.
|
chrisb2 (901hp) | This seems like a very big boost. I'm sure they designed the engine to survive the boost for the duration of the warranty period. Carefree.

In Germany, in 2010, the most reliable cars (according to ADAC Pannenstatistik, http://www.adac.de/infotestrat/unfal...aspx?pstatid=3) were: Subcompact / Kleinwagen 1. BMW Mini 2. Peugeot 207 3. Mitsubishi Colt 4. Opel Meriva 5. Nissan Note Compact / Untere Mittelklasse 1. BMW 1 Series 2. Audi A3 3. Peugeot 308 4. Mercedes B-type 5. Mercedes A-type Compact Executive / Mittelklasse 1. BMW /S80/V70 So much for Benz which is more reliable than BMW. Note that American cars are very rare in Germany and that only ten years ago, Japanese manufacturers dominated these statistics. It seems times have changed.

helpmegod (297hp) | Thank you Sedoy, nice comparison of German and American notes with several glaring contradictions. The big question now is which statistics are the most reliable?
|
160577 (748hp) | Which statistics are the most reliable...? I'm guessing both, since there are more engines (with less horsepower) available in Europe than in the US. Here in the US we get mostly petroleum engines with higher horsepower and it seems like BMW is doing a better job building diesel engines... This is indeed a significant difference, in some markets Europeans, diesel cars represent 80% of car sales. Additionally, premium Japanese brands like Lexus, Acura, Infiniti (all of which score very well in the JDPower rankings) are virtually non-existent in Europe...
|
Kendoz (897hp) | Quote: Posted by Sedoy Which statistics are the most reliable...? I think it depends on your definition of reliable. No, seriously, what does that mean? Does that mean being stuck on the shoulder of the road waiting for a tow, or not getting it in for warranty service every couple of months because some stupid computer freaked out and you have warning lights warning and bullshit in lame home mode every time you turn around?

10101996 (382hp) | This is the 2011 JD Power Vehicle Reliability Study. http://businesscenter.jdpower.com/JD...11029-vdss.pdf MB has improved a lot, while Audi and BMW are still below average. This is for American cars, so pretty much all gasoline engines and no diesel. Consumer Reports magazine in the United States also has reliability tables like this, and for each car, but they are for subscribers only. This is Top Gear from the UK, but 2006 is the most recent I could find. http://www.topgear.com/content/carsu...ures/08/2.html

happy8 (28hp) | Which MBs did you own, because MB has improved a lot since their divorce from Chrysler, so all new models after Chrysler have much better reliability. On the other hand, BMW's reliability (the engines in particular) declined after the introduction of the new era of oil turbocharging. Quote: Posted by MERCSUk153 MB sucks, I had 3 and all three had rust issues. But my E500 was the worst. Its engine was replaced due to metal fatigue. Then I also replaced the 4 overhead shocks. This within 6 years of ownership. Believe me, MB has problems too, but they try very hard not to let the public know and they also have less enthusiasts, so they don't express themselves as much on the forums or they are so clueless that they have no idea even if something is wrong with their car if it's underage.
|
125690 (568hp) | The BMW Bread & Butter N54 engine, which had the most applications of all the engines (Series 1, Series 3, Series 5, Series 7 and X6), was considered one of the least reliable engines in the BMW history. GREAT performance engine nonetheless! Quote: Originally posted by Clarence There have been problems with MB's M272 engine. That is to say, it is a V8 Twin Turbo monster developing 500 horsepower and capable of reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h or (190MPH) and a 0-60 in 4, 8 seconds. Not bad for a vehicle that can do double duty as a family hauler and grocery hauler. This vehicle also fills a unique niche, as there is no Touring version of the new M5, this will be the most powerful Touring available with a BMW badge at the moment. Here's what Autocar had to say about the B5 Touring Citation: To understand the B5 Touring, you have to put yourself in the mindset of someone who a) is extremely wealthy, b) likes to drive fast, preferably on quiet, unrestricted highways in order to avoid having to fly, and c) also wants to drive a quantifiably comfortable car. People who buy Alpinas aren't people who can't afford a factory M car. They're people who don't want a driving experience as manic as that offered by a machine M, but want the same type of straight-line performance. Quote: Yet for a specific type of customer, there's not much else to touch with a B5 Touring. We drove this car from the Alpina factory in the middle of Bavaria to the UK, which was the perfect environment to sample its mile-eating capabilities. It's hard to imagine many other cars that would have felt as comfortable on the same route, or as fast, and could have swallowed so much gear and still returned just over 25 mpg. [Source: Autocar.uk]

bigbro1 (884hp) | If you are concerned about the 0-100km speed on a 550xdrive. stock: 4.8 seconds vs Dinan S1: 4.2 seconds (based on user feedback) $3,000 tuning + taxes + installed labor = just under $4,000 CAD

Kennwort (959hp) | Wow. If these performance numbers are true, then we have an M wannabe5.

igetmoney (891hp) | The F10 M5 (based on the media post) does it in 4.4 seconds. With further aftermarket tuning, many suggest it will drop below 4 seconds

13071979 (128hp) | Does anyone have a 550 with Dinan software update? I'm planning to get a 550 with Dinan, but want to know what the difference is and what owners think of the upgrade. Does anyone have any performance numbers or even a video of it in action? I know Dinan (I currently have an E92 with stage 2 upgrade) but I want to know how much better the car is with the tuning. THANKS.

16101982 (990hp) | With the 640i arriving in October, will the 535i become a 540i this year? I know BMW plays the badge game like no other, but what are the chances of a 540i coming out. Turbo 6... very different from the last 540i e39....

my_komp_777 (708hp) | No, not at least for the EU and rest of the world markets. There will be a 530i slot between 528i and 535i, but it's just a rebadged N53 528i with improved power to return to the original level of the N53 E60 LCI 530i..

I wouldn't be surprised if a 540i eventually shows up. The new 528i with the turbo-4 is 0-60 in 6.0 sec, which isn't far off from what the 535i will do. Almost as much torque and a little less weight (maximum horsepower doesn't matter much just for 0-60). Further separation between the 528 and 535 with a 540 model would indeed make sense. I guess MY2013 at the earliest. I doubt they would wait until the ICL for the F10.

fortunato (380hp) | No, because the -40i cars use an N54 (bit-turbo) engine, while the 535 is equipped with the N55 (single turbo). I would be seriously surprised to see either the 1, 3 or 5 return to the N54.
|
corey12 (348hp) | Indeed, if the N20 535i improves between 0-60 and 6.2s, the 535i has to improve a bit, but how far can it go before it starts to intrude into 550i territory? I say 5.5 seconds is the limit. 5.4 for a “540i” Doesn’t the 640i already use the N55, so start-stop? Don't think the -40i badge requires an N54...the N55 has already been considered the complete replacement, right? The 1M was the last shot... it's done

The MY2012 535i will hit 0-100km/h in 5.8sec, thanks to some transmission optimization. Without 4x4, 0-100 time will reach diminishing returns due to limited traction.

GREAT performance engine nonetheless! The bread & butter for BMW is not the N54, the N54 is considered premium. BMW's real bread & butter is the N47 diesel, then come the N52/3 and N57.

ramrod (835hp) | Quote: Posted by grimlock Do you work for BMW in Hong Kong? Will the 530i and 528i work side by side? Will the 530i come to Hong Kong? When will the N20 come? No, I don't work for them, but I'm looking for one (either X3 35i, or 535i, or 528i N20). The restructured F10 range is made up of 520i, 528i, 530i, 535i and 550i. 520 and 528 use N20 but with different output. I'm not sure if the 530i will come or not, as it uses an N53 engine and it seems BMW hasn't sold any N53 F10s officially outside the EU. If BMW allows the N53 to be sold outside the EU, then the 530i will likely be used to fill the big gap between 528 and 535, but those in the know will likely choose 528 because in the real world it will perform better than the 530, particularly in Hong Kong. The N20 will start production from 9/2011, so probably if you order now you will get the N20. Another thing is that I think there might be a chance for the 528 and 535 (with start stop) to have an EFV tax deduction..

badass69 (140hp) | I partly agree with you, even these young guys drive BMW or Audi harder than generally older MB owners. However, I think BMW can improve two things: reliability and weight. When it comes to reliability, Americans worry about it a lot, because the prices of high-end cars (MB, BMW Audi, etc.) are cheaper than the rest of the world (even Germany), so the big public has access to high-end cars and they don't. I don't like spending money on dealership visits. Hello Lexus owners... Quote: Posted by MERCSUk153 MB has indeed improved, but manufacturing is behind Audi and BMW. A very good example is that BMW and Audi both offer a 12 year rust warranty, while MB only offers 4 years and an additional 4 years if you have your car serviced religiously by an MB dealership. The extra 4 years constitutes goodwill, meaning you won't get it unless someone tells you about it. The reason is that MB still does not galvanize the body parts of its cars. http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/content/.../warranty.html This gives a little insight into the inferior MB product. Most of the time you don't talk about it or show up in reliability reports, that's because many MB owners are older and very wealthy, so SAs position the problem as wear and tear and the customer doesn't even think about it. the part shouldn't have broken and you just have to pay for it because to them it's only a few cents. While most BMW and Audi owners are younger and, while affluent, still don't have the same disposable income on average, they will have a few more questions when it comes to costly repairs . Since 2000, when MB launched a whole new generation of cars, everything has gone downhill. It may be better currently, but in my opinion the reason is that BMW and Audi are pushing harder on the performance side and also on the technological side, so of course the reliability will be questioned, but it's is better than MB just using older technology to become more reliable..

I haven't driven the N20, I've only driven the 535i. According to reports about the X1, the engine is very good in terms of driving characteristics and revs smoothly up to the 7,000 rpm redline. You may need to change the exhaust as it seems a bit boring next to the N52, or perhaps upgrade the sound generator installed on the Z.4.
