eclipse7 (822hp) | Good, KA. I think your perceptions about "steering changes" are probably accurate, as the steering rack is probably exactly the same (or an interation, with minor changes that still need to accommodate the other old components) but with modifications software instead. These are “changes of direction” which they praise. The steering was updated after the first year through a software update - reviews indicated it was slightly heavier in normal mode - perhaps to correct complaints of wandering/drifting to the right/left . I didn't like this change, so I didn't bring it in to be updated. Now if it's lighter again (+ what other changes they may have made), I find that ironic. Anyway, great review, saves you the hassle of trying it yourself!

120392 (302hp) | Thanks, Grimlock. Yeah, that makes sense. For the record, I guess the LCI steering may be heavier than the pre-LCI base suspension, but I think the steering got a bit heavier with the addition of the M suspension on the pre-LCI cars , or at least heavier. with the launch of the 2013 models (I've only driven a 2013 M Sport so far). Therefore, I consider the LCI steering to be perhaps slightly less heavy than my M suspension car. Now what I'm REALLY interested in is the feel of the steering when connected to the M LCI suspension lower and stiffer (when we finally get them here in several months), as I suppose that might stiffen it up a bit, because it will. be a perfect comparison with my car M suspension 2013.

skater17 (668hp) | I bought a 2013 550i two months ago and just noticed a slight wobble when driving on grooved pavement (like they do before repaving) or concrete (which also has a slight groove). However, some grooved sidewalks were suitable. I feel like I'm on the train tracks, like a tiny turn to the side. It doesn't vibrate, but it only does so at high speeds (>75 mph). It's very light and I only noticed it three times last weekend on a road trip (700 miles) and never on a black roof, I replaced the tires last week, being a rental and making frequent trips to New York, it seemed like a good idea (I had the Goodyear LS2). I put the new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 (245/40ZR19) on, so I'm wondering if I'm somehow following the grooves or something. They haven't been balanced in terms of road force and the alignment hasn't been checked either, but it looks good. Should I do one or the other? The alignment on a new car seemed rather pointless and it doesn't appear to be a balance issue, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was..

johnny7 (976hp) | This seems normal to me. My 550 does this and my bikes have all done it on this type of surface. I even discovered that finished grooved concrete road does the same thing.

raphaela (902hp) | My car is in Indianapolis, while I am at home in Lynchburg. Here's my story: I left last Sunday (8/4) to go to Anderson, IN. About 350 miles into my trip, on Highway 35 in southern Ohio, I stopped for something to eat. When I got back onto the highway, the DSC warning came on, followed closely by the powertrain malfunction and cruise control malfunction warnings. Power was limited - little throttle response - but I was able to maintain my speed on the highway. Photos of the first two warnings are attached. After a quick NAV search, I saw that there was a dealership in Dayton, which was on my route - I would need gas, so I went there - if the car didn't start again, at the less close I would be to a dealer. But after refueling it started and the warnings went away. I rode the remaining 103 miles to Anderson with no problem. The next morning, both warnings were back. I decided to go to the nearest local dealership (Dreyer & Reinbold BMW in Indianapolis, about 30 miles away). They gave me a loan (actually a rental Chevrolet Impala from their affiliated Enterprise Rental agency) and kept the car for recovery. >,>, by the way, their customer service and the SA I dealt with, Kevin Montgomery, were great. They were courteous, kept me informed, offered me free loans before I even thought that far ahead, etc. Things could still go south, but so far they really deserve all those 10s in the survey! Anyway, they checked the car - here's what the service order says - complaint verified. Hooked to ISID and reading faults. Various accelerator pedal sensor plausibility defects (103308, D3564C, CF2CE1, D02D01). They replaced the gas pedal, fixed the faults, did a test drive and declared the problem fixed. Unfortunately, on the way back to Anderson, after about 20 miles, both faults returned, along with the reduced power. I parked in front of my wife's sister's apartment (where we were staying) and since we had things to do, I didn't try my car again until that evening. The faults were still there, and now I was in limp mode – I couldn't go more than 10 mph and the car drove poorly. I parked it and called roadside assistance. They called a towing company who loaded it up and took it to Dreyer & Reinbold. I called the SA and emailed (it was around 11pm) and when I arrived the next morning they had already initiated a PuMA case and arranged a rental for me to come home to. They state that the EMR needs to be replaced http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...ectronics.html and that it usually takes 7-10 days. When the car is repaired, BMW will do what's called a reunion - they will pay to bring the car back to me here at home so I don't have to make a trip back to Indiana to pick it up. I post for informational purposes and for the therapeutic value of telling my story. And yes, it absolutely sucks to see your expensive new BMW break down hundreds of miles from home! On a positive note, if this is going to happen, the parking lot at your sister-in-law's apartment building, 30 miles from a BMW dealership, is not a bad place. I could have been arrested in West Virginia or southern Ohio, a hundred miles or more from anywhere. I will update as things develop. In the meantime, please feel free to offer your sympathy, advice, etc...

babyboy21 (790hp) | Wow, the same thing happened to me this morning. I just placed an order for a MY14 F10 and on the way back from the dealership this alarm went off. It felt like the car was losing a little power, but I was able to continue driving it. I left the car alone for 4 or 5 hours. I turned it on and the alarm disappeared. I drove it again this afternoon and no alarm. I'm not sure what happened?

annaba23 (688hp) | I just posted two updates **Update 8/12/13** As they say, good news and bad news. The good news: Somehow the dealership managed to get the DME up overnight, so they installed it and reprogrammed it, up until last Friday. After a long test drive, no codes returned. The bad news: There's a 350 mile distance limit for this Reunite program, so I'm officially over that limit by 256 miles. If it is delivered here, I should pay the extra cost. My local SA here in Lynchburg tells me it's usually a flat fee, then a per mile amount, and the customers he's dealt with in the past usually decide to go get it themselves. The Indianapolis SA says he thinks it's about $185 plus mileage. I considered letting them drop it off somewhere in between, but instead decided to just drive back there in a rental and bring it back myself. With gas/day rental/overnight motel stay it will cost me about $200. BTW - I've looked at a number of threads from people reporting similar issues - in my case I've always used Top Tier fuels and was only at 1/4 tank when I stopped to do the full of gas (I usually fill up once a week). ~ about half a tank), so we can probably rule them out as potential causes. I will be interested to see the details of the service order. **UPDATE #2 -- 08/19/2013** My car is fixed and back home. Here is the exact language of the service order: *ENG REPAIR DIAG Customer reports that the DSC light and transmission malfunction light have returned. The car is in limp mode and swerving. Faulty DME. Hooked to ISID and reading faults. 200808 (DME, internal fault). Test plan followed. It said it replaces the EMR. Created TC file #54553544. I was told to replace the DME. DME replacement. Hooked up to the ISSS and programmed with ISTA/P 50.2.002. New level F010-13-07-504. I plugged in the ISID and calibrated both front seats. The part is listed as Base Control Unit D, number FP 12-14-8-604-113. I sent my various rental car receipts and other receipts to BMW Claims Roadside Assistance and contacted BMWNA Customer Service..

sherbert1 (645hp) | The M5 hood is the same as all other 5 Series hoods. The M5 front bumper does not bolt onto the regular 5 Series unless you also swap it to the M5 fenders (they are wider). Anything is possible if your store is good enough. The best looking front bumper for this car is the Msport bumper, unless you go the M5 route. Alan

vvvvvvvvvv (669hp) | I had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at several LCI models while I was at my local dealership today for service. I saw the following, msport (535i, 535d and 550i) and luxury (528i and 535i). For reference, my current vehicle is a 2013 535i msport with the msport passive suspension. All comments below are just my humble opinion, so I completely understand if your opinion differs. Exterior: 1. Headlights: All vehicles I saw had standard xenon headlights, not optional full LED headlights. The only thing that stood out to me is that the turn signal now uses a standard orange halogen bulb. Having a pre-LCI F10 with nice LED turn signals, it seems this new standard headlight housing is a downgrade. 2. Grill – you have to be a real enthusiast to see the difference, but the slats have a slightly different angle towards the top of the grill, which isn't a big change here. 3. Lower front bumper- Fortunately unchanged on the msport (although the fog lights on msport are now centered in their openings). The front bumper of the luxury models looks busy, I thought maybe in real life it would look better than in the photos, but that's not the case. Too many lines, too much black plastic, and it doesn't fit well with the rest of the car's design. The cars were side by side with the 2013 models and the front bumper of the non-msport 2013 models looks so much smoother, smoother and sleeker. Again, this is a personal preference, but it seems the designers forced a design change that isn't an improvement over the pre-LCI model. 4. Front Fender Turn Signals - In my opinion this is one of the terrible cost saving measures so they don't have to re-stamp new fenders at the factory. Since they moved the turn signal to the mirror housing they just left a big piece of chrome plastic on the fender that serves no purpose. While, as in pre-LCI cars, the turn signal housing was both aesthetically pleasing but also useful for housing the turn signal, now it just looks odd. 5. Wheels - unchanged in Msport, in luxury versions 528i and 535i this was an improvement over the non-msport pre-LCI wheels. This is all subjective, but I was never a fan of the 528i 5-star wheels or the multi-spoke 535i wheels on pre-LCI cars. 6. Rear bumper- Fortunately unchanged on msport. In the realm of luxury finishes, it seems designers have once again been forced to do something just to say it's different. The chrome trim that runs across the entire rear bumper and surrounds the reflectors looks strange and artificial. This looks totally out of place and is another example where the designers should have left the rear bumper alone. 7. Taillights – Such a minor, almost imperceptible change. I was expecting a slight tint like on the LCI 7 series, but it's the same red color as pre-LCI. Interior 1. The I-Drive-Touch feature is a gadget that will wear out quickly. To me this seems like over-engineering. We didn't need a touchscreen feature and I doubt this feature will be used by many owners. 2. Steering wheel - unchanged on the Luxury version. At msport I thought I would like the look of the steering wheel seeing the photos, but in real life the steering wheel looks very out of place on the 5 series. When I look at the steering wheel, the dash, the gauges, something is wrong not. The steering wheel design is too thin and neat for a car of this size. I know some may disagree with me on this, but that's just my opinion. 3. Cut the pieces - one more.

raleedy (381hp) | Nice comparison. You mentioned that the front turn signals with standard xenons are no longer LED, but are the rear turn signals still LED? Additionally, do LCI multicontour seats now feature adjustable side bolsters for US models? ??

alerta (364hp) | Great article and I agree about the turn signals. It's just lazy to put an unnecessary chrome piece on the fenders.

14071986 (140hp) | Good article, thank you. The wheel gap is gigantic on the new M Sports and is an infuriating deal breaker here. Just when they finally succeeded with a tight and comfortable wheel gap on the M ('13) M Sports suspension.

Can't find a BMW reference for the specific lowering on the latest LCI models, just a lowered suspension reference for the M-sport suspension in the UK. HighlandPete

68chevelle (325hp) | When you put bigger wheels on higher suspension, it exacerbates it. I seriously think BMW is very conservative in stating how much lower the M suspension is. Not only does the on-base LCI M Sport suspension appear about 2x higher, but about 10+ people who have reported seeing the two side by side state that it is actually 1.5-2x higher (one of they said he could fit his entire fist through the LCI M Sport wheel spacing, as many photos show, can easily be the case). I also measured my M suspension to be a good 1.5 lower than someone who got an LCI M Sport. Whatever the technical difference, it *SEEMS* the difference between day and night (higher).

See where you're coming from... Appearance and measurements are two different things, and optical illusions related to rim size are not ride height dimensions either, as we know. Are some of these "illusions" also examples of showrooms that are not set to road height due to transportation blockages, etc. ? We hear that the F30 xDrive models ride high compared to the M-sport suspensions, like it's the end of the world and a deal breaker for some users. But let's be real, it's only 10mm (BMW figures), so a lot of drama for virtually nothing. I have parked my car (Adaptive Drive) near M-sport models with M-sport passive suspension and there is not much visual difference. I guess the only way to get data is to measure the wheel center to the fender well, like BMW uses for geometric parameters, and see what the physical dimensions of the models are. Take the dimensions of both sides, as a little tilt of the body can make it look so different anyway. To start... I'm going to give my front wheel F11 2011 535i M-sport (with AD) a front wheel center and fender arch dimension of 400mm (15 3/4) passenger side, 390mm (15 3/8) on the driver's side, while the car was in reverse in my driveway. I'll consider it a "forward" dimension again when I'm on the road. HighlandPete

003003 (817hp) | Is the 2013 an xdrive? Even if this is the case, you will definitely notice a lower position than white. Although my 2013 is even lower (less gap) than the 2013 pictured here.

bedford (603hp) | The wheel spacing problem is exaggerated. I measured carefully and the LCI is 3/8 higher in the rear and 5/8 higher in the front compared to the 2013 MSport. The gap is essentially the same as the non-MSport 2013 that I I measured on my next door neighbors series 5 2013..

pomodoro (196hp) | Are LEDs brighter than Xenon, it seems LCI is a failure by removing the LED towers that made the 11-13 look classier on the Xenon. LED is the way to go now. I agree that the metal on the bumpers is not stylish, it looks rather garish in photos. However, I still haven't seen 14 in person, so I'll have to wait to make a final comment on that. BUT PRE LCI seems to be the best value if you like the classic 11-13 non-M sport lines, which I still have. I'm also disappointed that they didn't clean the rear bumper of the M sport. The F30 335i M sport is much cleaner and looks better IMHO. But you also have to deal with the smaller size of the 3 which many of you don't like, so I guess it's a wash..
|
1daisy (543hp) | I had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at several LCI models while I was at my local dealership today for service. Having a pre-LCI F10 with nice LED turn signals, it seems like this new standard headlight housing is a downgrade. While, as in pre-LCI cars, the turn signal housing was both aesthetically pleasing but also useful for housing the turn signal, it now just looks odd.

Can't find a BMW reference for the specific lowering on the latest LCI models, just a lowered suspension reference for the M-sport suspension in the UK. HighlandPete

02071978 (35hp) | When you put bigger wheels on higher suspension, it exacerbates it. I seriously think BMW is very conservative in stating how much lower the M suspension is. Not only does the on-base LCI M Sport suspension appear about 2x higher, but about 10+ people who have reported seeing the two next to each other say it is actually 1.5-2x higher (one said he could put his entire fist through the LCI M Sport wheel spacing, as many photos show can easily be the case). I also measured my M suspension to be a good 1.5 lower than someone who got an LCI M Sport. Whatever the technical difference, it *LOOKS* like the difference between day and night (higher).

HighlandPete

sweetest (127hp) | Hi guys, question regarding the m sport 550 diffuser. I recently purchased a diffuser from parts.com after researching and filtering down to a 2012 550i with M version for a quad setup. I received the package today and it only has a cutout on one side (d'oh!). I came back to check my order and sure enough the parts diagram has a single cutout...but if I filtered correctly to a 550i with the m trim, shouldn't it be for the dual exhaust? The part number I ordered is #51127904994 and I also attached a photo that shows I selected the M sport diffuser for the 550. After doing some more research (I know...I would have had to do this before), looks like the correct part # is 51127906248. So my question is: is it my bad or parts.com? I know I should have triple checked the part number, but doesn't the 550i m sport come with dual exhausts no matter what? I just want to make sure before contacting parts.com to have this corrected. Thanks in advance!

|
dance! (691hp) | Hey Martin, I'm not sure how much the discount is worth: less than $3,000 I guess. I would not ask what they can do to compensate, rather I would state your request in a letter to the dealership's general manager asking when you will receive the check. Alternatively, you can simply request a service/parts credit. I work with a number of dealers and my impression is that most BMW dealers will make a real effort to make this right for you. Good luck.
|
miley12 (258hp) | Where are you located. If you are in the US, the dealer is not able to discuss the vehicle with you provided you have the paperwork from them and can prove what you say here. Cool heads will prevail, so stay calm and bypass the dealership line staff. Go directly to the general manager and have a nice chat with him. What concession is this? Are you willing to accept monetary value for a discount and extended warranty? Are you ready to return the car and get another one? I ask because the dealer may incur a net loss if they have to take the discount and warranty, so they may want to cancel your transaction..

jason6 (639hp) | The problem is not the discount, but how I found out about it. You must be a BMWCCA member for at least one year to be eligible for a discount. You submit paperwork to BMW CCA showing you have a certified car, they verify it with BMW NA and only give you $250. But it can go up to $1,500 if you buy a specific new car. I just want my car to be certified. That's what I paid and had the certified vehicle inspection checklist signed by the technician who performed the inspection, the service manager, the pre-owned manager and myself. I don't want to piss off the dealer. I might need to do something one day and they might do it as a courtesy if I'm in good graces. The dealership is an hour from my house.

10011996 (696hp) | Do you have any documentation proving this was a CPO? if so, be aware that around $1,850 is what dealers pay BMW for CPO and they pass that cost on to you. I hear what you are saying about your relationship with the dealership, there are only two in town and they are both owned by the same company. Ultimately, if they put it in writing and they got it wrong, they have no other choice to make things right. A solution might be to ask them for an extended BMW warranty. Good luck and keep us informed of the evolution of the saga. Quote: Posted by Martin528 The discount is not the problem, but how I found out about it. 120681 (14hp) | I received notification from BMW CCA that my car was not eligible for the rebate because it was not certified by BMW NA prior to the time of sale. Have my salesperson text me and my documents for the CPO did not go through the final process due to a dealership error. First of all, getting it certified is the priority. It was sold to me as is and I had the CPO vehicle inspection checklist done on my car. How can I remedy the loss of discount? BMW CCA is correct that it was not certified before sale, so I think I'm not getting a discount from them. Should I ask the dealer to compensate and how should I resolve this problem? More capital now than money. Please advise, Martin

More capital now than money. Please inform, Martin. Tell the dealer - in a calm but assertive voice - exactly what you just wrote, except replacing the last paragraph with the question, how about compensating me for your delay in paperwork, because it did the BMWCCA rebate cost? So hope for fair treatment. Good luck.

071277 (663hp) | I send a message to my seller. He said he found my CPO documents and the last step of the IT process and it hadn't been set up. He said he was waiting for the right person to come in. I received two text messages asking for updates and no response..

cooker (692hp) | Hey Martin, I'm not sure how much the discount is worth: less than $3,000 I guess. I would not ask what they can do to compensate, rather I would state your request in a letter to the dealership's general manager asking when you will receive the check. Alternatively, you can simply request a service/parts credit. I work with a number of dealers and my impression is that most BMW dealers will make a real effort to make this right for you. Good luck.

1408 (408hp) | Where are you located. I ask because the dealer may incur a net loss if they have to take advantage of the discount and a warranty, so they may want to cancel your transaction..
