I upgraded from a 2011 535xi to a 2014 550xi and the first day I had my 550xi I clearly noticed that the 550 was too heavy compared to the 535. I drive the car hard... meaning I take ramps and winding roads more aggressively than most. I didn't like the F10 without the adaptive suspension, so both cars have the adaptive suspension and active roll stabilization...which definitely helps reduce body roll...but when cornering hard with the 550...it was it VERY noticeable straight from the 535. Having said that, I'm now very used to the driving feel of the 550, having put 6km on the clock since October 2013... and I'm in love with this car. Please don't let our opinion on the 535 vs 550 tongue weight influence your opinion on the car. I also agree that I would set a leasing price exactly to your liking. You can probably negotiate a better deal on a vehicle that is in stock at a local dealer than on a special order... However, I have always ordered my BMWs to my specifications because 1. There has never been a car on the lot of the Dealer's was as fully equipped as I would have liked and 2. It seems that the color combinations that dealers order for their inventory are very generic and never what I would like. Please let us know what options are essential and what would be good. I will then help you calculate the good deal you can get. I am also in New Jersey and have shopped at many local retailers here, so I can give you feedback on many of the retailers here.

dudeman (698hp) | As most of you are probably thinking. I should be referred to another post where this discussion with this comparison already existed. Well, my main question is this. What's the difference between the two other than torque, horsepower, or speed in general? Does the 550 have larger internal dimensions than the 535? Does 550 offer more functionality? I'm looking for a car on Swapalease and the 550xi Msport is my choice over the 535xi Msport if there are more differences than just speed. Thanks
|
mike24 (953hp) | In general, the 550xi has more standard equipment than the 535xi. One difference you didn't mention is that the 550xi's handling is nose-heavy, whereas the 535xi is not

Does that sound like a good deal on a 550? Yeah...sounds like a pretty good deal...but without more details...I can't tell you. My MSRP for the 2014 550xi was $88,000...total price was $77,000 and all fees were prepaid...the month was $1,000...Add MSDs and some US Dollars added to get to $800 per month, 36 months / $15,000 per year, BMW Tire and Rim Protection If I had waited, I might have been able to get a better deal on the lease (8% off MSRP+ $3,000 in BMW rewards + $1,000 BMW CCA rebate)...but I ordered in July '13 and it was delivered in October '13
|
220189 (786hp) | Same exact internal dimensions. If you go online to BMW's website, you can pull up a comparison matrix that shows all the 5 Series (528, 535, 550) and then all the standard and optional equipment.

bmwm3gtr (13hp) | You can option a 535 to have everything a 550 has. So technically the two cars only consist of power and torque. I've had both and here are the pros and cons. 535 Pros – good balance between fuel efficiency and performance. Cons – it’s a fast car, but not fast in my opinion. 550 Pros – VERY, very powerful. Always enough power. Head and shoulders faster than the 535. Cons – MPG is pretty terrible. When I accelerate on the highway I might do 25-26 mpg, but when driving locally I barely manage 13 mpg. Since I don't drive to work, I could afford a more powerful and less fuel-efficient vehicle. Alan
|
pxb (709hp) | Hey Alan, I don't drive to work either. But even before that I had a Honda Civic. Will be a first in the luxury car family and will go straight to the 550xi lol. The lease is only for 23 months, so I'll take a look at the car today and maybe close the deal. I will keep you all updated.

On paper it seems so, but according to dyno results, the two engines are much closer in terms of performance than you'd think. BMW underestimated the old engine, while the new engine actually makes more power. In any case, it's a fast car. As far as driving differences go, 99.9% of drivers won't track their F10, so you won't notice. Absolutely not, apart from what BMW has done with the LCIs, because if anything my 550i drives better than my 535xi. Both cars are still pigs, but the 550 is a much faster pig, lol Alan

Bubbles1 (357hp) | I would negotiate a deal on a new '14 550xi with the options you want before making the trade. $820/month doesn't seem so great on a used car when you can get similar monthly mileage on a brand new car that has exactly what you want. Keep in mind that with a lease swap, you're essentially leasing a used vehicle - the MSRP isn't even relevant anymore since you have to think of it like leasing a CPO car. Also, the whole idea of rent swapping seems a bit messy to me - maybe that's just me. As for the comments about the 550 being nose-heavy - nonsense. You can push this car pretty hard on the road without even noticing anything. If it's necessary to track the car to find out how nose-heavy it is, then so be it... but no one in their right mind tracks a 550. I haven't had the F10 long, but I know from previous BMWs that the assembly could be removed from the trunk to access the light bulbs and such. One of my previous BMWs always suffered from a partially loose assembly after disassembly. Although I've never had any problems with insects getting in, I can certainly imagine there's plenty of scope for this. In this regard, I would also check that you don't have an error problem. One is strange, two might worry me, and anything more than two would look devastating. What kind of beetles were those? I know some people who had a Volvo that ended up becoming home to a colony of ants, settling in a water drain on the car and finding their way into the cabin. Just as insects can invade a house, I'm guessing they can do the same to a car...albeit less frequently.

retirement (28hp) | UPDATE: I just got back from the dealer after my SA and the shop manager looked at the lamp which they said was covered and they would replace it. NOW my question is: Will the part being replaced (driver side interior light on the trunk) be brighter than the rest of the lights? I think no, since they are LED? Anyone has ever replaced a single section of an F10 taillight housing?

musica. (306hp) | So I'm doing a few things in the garage... I look at my F10 and notice two dead insects in my left taillight. They are glued to the lower part of the interior light on the trunk. Has anyone ever encountered this?! Wouldn't it make sense that water could also get in? I'm confused!!!!!!

fj5tx19HiT (415hp) | I just test drove the 2014 535 msport xdrive and was hugely disappointed. My first BMW was a 2006 330i e90 6-speed sedan with the sport package. I also drove my brother's 2007 335i e90 6-speed Sport Package coupe, which he purchased the year after I purchased it. Another point of reference is an E60 535i (without X-drive) with Sport Package that I drove a few years ago and really liked. Now I'm back in the car market and need a larger sports sedan. Also, I thought I chose the 535 F10 because 1. BMWs were fun, 2. They always had the best balance of sportiness, comfort, driver feedback, etc. for my taste. 3. the F10 msport looks great 4. BMW has great leasing deals 5. I would love to do ED on my next car. However, I was very disappointed with the 2014 535 msport xdrive because it felt heavy, underpowered and the steering was unresponsive. I tried changing various settings to Sport and Sport+, but the power delivery never impressed me and I could never hear a decent engine note. Compared to an E60 535i RWD automatic with a similar engine, the F10 really couldn't match the fun-to-drive factor. It still looks great in the MSSport package and BMW still has very attractive leasing offers. Nevertheless, after leaving the BMW dealer, I stopped by AUDI and took a test drive with the 3.0t Audi A6 in the Prestige package. Compared to the 535 xdrive msport, the Audi felt much faster in real-world driving. It felt much lighter, the supercharged engine felt much more responsive and even the steering felt better, although in my opinion it's still light on Audi and far from good. In my opinion, the 3.0 t Audi A6 far surpasses the 535 xdrive msport in terms of driving pleasure. Still, their leasing deals are terrible. I can practically lease a 550i F10 at the Audi A6 rate I tested. The S6 is a much nicer car, but is just as out of my budget as an M5. Now I'm looking at the following options: 1. 2014 550i RWD MSport with passive sport suspension (704). I live in the NYC area and couldn't find a 550i to test drive. I really hope the car drives like I expect a BMW to. I'd definitely have to take it for a test drive before pulling the trigger, even though I've read some great reviews here on the forum. 2. 2014 Cadillac (yes, Cadillac) CTS v Sport with 420 hp. I've read some reviews and it seems this car drives the way BMWs have driven in the past. I'm a little worried that it's a Cadillac, but at the same time I like it a little since there are so many BMWs, MBs and Audis where I live. And did I mention that the CUE system seems terrible to me? Nevertheless, in my opinion, driving pleasure is always more important than the functionality of the infotainment system. 3. Lexus GS 350 F Sport. Seems to drive well. Costs the least of these remaining options, but also has the lowest power consumption. 4. Supercharged Jaguar XF. This vehicle is a distant 4th as it appears to be more expensive than the other options above, but again seems to have the driving characteristics I am looking for. Any thoughts? Comments? I'll update this thread as I test drive the above cars.

shit11 (941hp) | Meh, I looked at all these cars and they all have their faults. The BMW (550 in my case) is the best mix of sport, luxury and good looks. Honestly, if I had found an A7 Prestige at a reasonable price I probably would have bought one. For me the A6 is just too anonymous, but it is a beautiful car and the V6 is a great engine. I agree that the F10s aren't much fun to drive, but non-runflat tires make a huge difference in the corners. The GS was also pretty boring and felt noticeably smaller inside than the others. I'm sure the Cadillac is a decent car, but the interior seems tacky to me and it will be worth 40% of what you bought it for in three years. I didn't like the Jaguar at all. The BMW has by far the nicest interior, and the TT V8 in the 550 is a monster and worth the extra weight the car brings. I couldn't be happier with mine and have no regrets. Because of the 535s engine, I think all of the cars mentioned above are worth a closer look.

17101985 (754hp) | The F10 is similar to a 7 Series in many ways. Try an F30. About the same size and weight as an E39 5 Series. Maybe you like it better. And forget about xDrive. If you need a winter car, get an SUV. Rear wheel drive BMW is a real car, Audi needs the Quattro to not be just another VW.

The only thing it has over the 535 is power, which doesn't help much on our roads. You should choose one.

mohamed123 (255hp) | None of these cars will feel like your E90 or E60. But RWD with the 704 suspension makes a big difference. I have one in this configuration in NYC and am very happy with it. Also drives well over bad potholes. As far as driving enjoyment goes, I would weigh up what percentage of your driving enjoyment you enjoy versus how much you enjoy spending the rest of the time in the car (interior, controls, etc.). Cue for example, even if the CTS would be more fun under certain circumstances, it would ruin the car for me. When I'm sitting in traffic, the F10 with multi-contour seats is an extremely comfortable place to be. Unfortunately, in our area it will be very difficult to find one of these cars in reverse gear to test drive. The 535 is a bit quiet in terms of engine noise, so you'd have to get an exhaust if that's important. However, I'd rather hear a quiet inline-6 than any v6.

frank12 (513hp) | valsorim, The F10 is the old 7 series and the F30 is the old 5 series. If you want a BMW with the performance of the E60, look at a 335i MSport or an M3, it's about the same size as your old E60. Forget the 550i if you value good handling, because the 550i is even heavier than the 535i and sits in all the wrong places. I had a 2012 Audi A6 3.0T. I agree that the A6 has a better powertrain and handling, but I disagree that the A6 has better steering. Cadillac CTS? Really? If you don't care about the quality of your car, you might want to consider the CTS or perhaps a Chrysler 300 Hemi. I'm also thinking about the Jaguar XF Supercharged for my next car. The price is slightly cheaper than the 535i. The engine is very nice, but the steering is a little too light.
|
DMD (262hp) | I will agree with all of these findings. The F10 is a beautiful car to look at, but it might not be that much fun to drive, especially if you're stepping straight out of an E90 or similar. However, adding sway, springs, removing runflats, and installing a new, louder exhaust could solve many of your problems. EDIT: If you hated the steering in the still-hydraulic 535xi form, you'll definitely freak out if you test drive a non-XI with electric steering. I really hope they work out the steering for 2015 at least, that's the big problem I have with my 2013 535, well that and the fact that I was a fool who didn't want to pay for the NAV and can't find a buyer now.

Geekybrain (686hp) | I currently have a GS 350 F Sport and would like to switch to another car. Compared to a 535 msport I think the 1.5 msport looks better from the outside but the GS has a better interior. 2. the GS has better suspension. 3. The 535 msport accelerates much faster in real life thanks to turbos and low torque. 4. Overall I would like to change something because the GS just feels slow... you have to rev it all the way up to feel the power... I think in real life it feels similar to a 528 in terms of acceleration ... 5. Of course the cheapest option is to lease it (I bought one, so it doesn't matter to me, but it could be very important to you) I tested a 550i msport a few months ago and decided to give it a try not to change, for the same reasons you didn't like your 535 msport... If you feel the 535 is heavy, then the 550 is HEAVY as it weighs about 4,300 pounds, making the handling even worse makes... Of course it has power, but that's the ONLY thing that was better than my GS in my opinion. So I couldn't justify switching to a car that I wouldn't really like either. I've heard the Cadillac Vsport is great, but I'm not sure what the lease deals are... I wouldn't really want to lease a Cadillac for the same price as a BMW... Audi has a different business model and prefers instead buying lease, so their leases are terrible... So if you want one you basically have to buy one... Maybe buy a 2013 A6 CPO? I'm planning on testing an S6 soon... Maybe that'll be my car soon.

dana1234 (412hp) | The 550 gives you the extra power and responsiveness you're looking for - and more. I came from an E90 335 and the 550 simply beats the 335 by far in terms of response and performance. I also live in the New York City area and chose the 550 for the DHP. I had the passive sport suspension on my 335, and the potholes and bumpy roads were just getting old. The DHP offers a really nice way to switch between soft and stiff suspension when needed. I have found it to be truly invaluable. I also travel to Boston often for work and the roads there are just awful too - Comfort+ on bumpy or cobbled roads makes all the difference... back to Sport on the gentle curves to satisfy both personalities. We also have an Audi in the house (maybe two soon), and as nice as they are, the interior just isn't of the same quality in my opinion. The materials feel cheaper, the navigation system is far from BMW quality and I think it looks a bit dated compared to BMW. Nevertheless, you really can't go wrong with an A6. It's a great car, but not as great as an F10 in my opinion. The F10 won't steer or feel like the older hydraulic BMWs. Some people are really put off by it, but I don't mind. If you feel it, you'll actually notice that the steering is extremely precise - and that's the main point, isn't it? Some people value the feeling more than the benefits. The steering is spot on and precise, but you have to get used to a slightly different feel/feedback. After riding my first month or so, I was fully acclimatized. Finally, the F10 is obviously a larger car. If you can make do with a small cabin, the F30 would certainly offer a more nimble experience if that's high on your priority list. But if you're willing to give up a little of that agility, the F10 really offers luxury and pampering that, in my opinion, far outweighs what little you give up in agility.

However, I'd rather hear a quiet inline-6 than any v6.

cabinet (289hp) | valsorim, The F10 is the old 7 series and the F30 is the old 5 series.
