tongues (461hp) The fan turned on was normal, but this time it sounded like a jet, the problem disappeared until this morning, I had just arrived at school, right in the parking lot I got the drive malfunction, the engine overheated, the fans were spinning, and outside it snowed. I had only been driving for an hour and was driving normally.

eTravelmoleOptin (78hp) Hey, is anyone tired of this floating boat ride? Or is it just me? I want to try the JB4 but the car can't handle the stock power it has now, the body roll is almost scary. I ordered H&R lowering springs and an M5 front sway bar. I'll have it installed when I'm back in town in a few weeks. I'll let you know what happens next.

jenks89 (363hp) Oil temperature within normal range?

pepsi5 (287hp) Nice grill accents. Do you have stock springs or lowering springs???

grandma5 (812hp) The problem is getting worse, the car is currently in the workshop. After a few minutes of starting the car started to overheat. When I took it to the shop and my service advisor tried to pull it into the garage, the car stalled. This is really strange, I've never heard of anyone else having this problem with the f10 m5. My service advisor and I are both very curious about what's going on with the car.

loveya12 (795hp) On standard 19er wheels. Bobby. I'll be looking for spools or springs soon. Can go the H&R route, but not sure if the drop will be significant. I've also considered adjustable KW springs, but I'm not sure if there are any problems. Need to do some research. And great again, yes, body roll is bad on this heavy car. Let's know how this m5 stabilizer helps with that because I would love to do this mod too. I hope the drop helps a little. Good luck with your new purchase, Black. Let's start modding. I love that JB4 tune and the sweet sound of my turbo coil. I find myself not even playing my radio that loud just so I can hear my car whistling at me.

My service advisor and I are both very curious about what's going on with the car. It's not good if your SA is nosy. There may be something wrong with the cooling system - obviously it's overheated, you know that. Fans may be in overdrive trying to compensate. Many years ago my wife had a VW that sounded like a jet (as you described) when parked and running. After a day or two I took it in for service. It turned out that there were usually two main fans that helped cool the radiator and one of them had failed. The other was working overtime. Obviously it's a different issue... but the noisy fan symptom tells me the car is probably trying to compensate for another failed component that's supposed to keep temperatures under control. Good luck with that - I would imagine a quick OBDII scan would reveal something pretty quickly.

I just got home from a car meet, on the highway with 4 m3 and was having fun. I was able to keep up, but the body rolled, ugh. This week we continue with new bikes. I'll take a look at these mods. It's so hard to find the right coilover kit for the xdrive. Does anyone have any suggestions??

woodlecj (727hp) This could be under development and it is not certain if they are installed in US cars, but catalytic converters are automatically regenerated from time to time. Usually this happens while driving and goes unnoticed. However, if it is triggered just before the engine stops, the fans will run at full speed for at least 5 minutes. My old Audi did this a few times and I was convinced there was something wrong with the car. The dealer finally told me what was going on, but there was nothing about it in the manual. You can usually tell by a burning smell coming from under the car. As I said, this may not apply to you.

kenshiro (77hp) Not yet, I'll be away for a few more weeks. But I know how you feel, in a straight line it's a decent ride, but as soon as the turn or a lane change at high speed comes around, you have to make some decisions, lol.

kennard09 (16hp) The only thing I can think of is the last time that happened to me was when my water pump failed. It would overheat within 5 minutes and the fans would sound like a jet trying to cool the car down.

maricon1 (839hp) Ok, I just arrived back in town yesterday. I dropped the car off this morning to have the H&R lowering springs and M5 front sway bar installed. Hopefully everything goes well and I'll take pictures and a review tonight. I've had enough of the boat.

brittany13 (522hp) Sounds exactly like what happened to my X5 (since I traded it in). They replaced the water pump and later the radiator.

JasonCSU (796hp) Okay, so I just picked up the car. My first ride isn't entirely impressive, but it's a big difference. Less float, there is still a slight body roll when cornering, but it's just progressive to the point where it then just locks up and stalls... for me that's much better than praying for it to stall , lol. The only thing is that it looks great from a distance, but up close I can't help but feel like the wheels can be pushed out further. I'm thinking maybe some spacers. What do you all mean???

tomato (672hp) BMW will take care of it if you have a problem. I'm not worried about the nun.

rocky69 (346hp) Super 6, your front bumper is an M5 bumper with fog lights??

11061976 (678hp) I got the car back a few days ago, they tested and replaced the fans. The very next day after school I started my car (cold start), the car wasn't even at operating temperature, the fans started roaring again. I took it back to the workshop and left it there. The entire dealership could hear my fans. I think there's something wrong with the car. When my father tried to start the car again to move it, it stalled.

Although the M5 is a close relative of the rest of the lineup, I'm wondering if the people on this board might have experience with it? Anyway, it seems to me that there is a problem with your cooling system - be it water pump, radiator, etc. - and BMW should be able to easily diagnose and fix the problem.

rome (133hp) So in 2011 I bought an Alpine White 535xdrive. Before that I had a 2008 550 Msport that I totaled due to a stupid mistake. My 550 was a beast of a car, but when I lived in New York the weather and snow were no problem for the 550. After my stupid mistake and totaling the car, I decided to give the XDrive a try. Oh, and because of the career change, I thought I'd better take it easy and get the 6-cylinder instead of another V8 engine. I would like to add that I am by no means one of those guys who fusses over the performance of mods. (But I'm learning so much with myself) I would be happy if I could change my own oil without breaking anything. I just like to modify my cars for fun. So... So my new toy and project became the 535x. It has the black interior (Dakota it's called, I think). I think it's a base model because it doesn't really have all the bells and whistles that my 550 had. It took some getting used to the car as it felt a bit bigger than my 550. Of course, being powered by a V8 took some getting used to. I have to say, it's a beast in the snow. This year, NYC was hit with a lot of snow, but I had no problems at all with my new toy. Ok, enough of this snow nonsense and get on with the construction. So I took it two days after I picked it up to get rid of the fish bowl look and got a few tints. Based on my experience in NYC, the powers that be don't appreciate dark tint, and I'm sure I've probably paid half of one of these officers' salary in tickets over my years living in NYC, but... I like my privacy and figured if I was going to get a tint ticket for light tints, I might as well get a ticket for dark tints. So I drove the limo all around with 35% in my windshield. Oh, it looked so sexy. About a month later I wanted to make some changes. I get bored quickly. So I wanted to start with the exterior. I ordered Msport front and Msport side skirts. I ordered these parts from Trinity Autosports. Firment wasn't great and I'm still working with my body shop to get the perfect fit. Luckily he's a friend of mine so I just have to find the time to get to him, I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the rear. Like almost everyone else, they opted for an M5 rear bumper and quad exhaust. I still don't know what I want to do because I really like the stock bumper and my single exit on each side. So still deciding. After I installed these two months later, the mod bug appeared again. I decided on some performance mods. So I decided we should have some fun. I ordered JB4 tune and BMS intake from Burgermotorsports. Then I thought, why not, and ordered the Evolution Racework Downpipe. I did some research on the JB4 and tried to get people's opinions on it and it seemed like everyone had a different opinion. Some spoke well, others spoke poorly. Some crunched numbers and argued about this and that. Honestly, I think the melody is great, as mentioned before. I'm not a performance-focused guy, but in my opinion this thing definitely changes the feel of the car. It definitely feels sharper and I feel like turbo lag is minimized significantly. I don't know, I'm not a racer, just a guy who likes to modify his toys,....

ivan1996 (35hp) I finally got it repaired, they replaced the water pump and everything seems fine at the moment. But due to my luck I have to change my two front tires, I have a dent. Thank you for the support everyone.

ERIC212NYC (241hp) Congratulations! I also bought something similar a few months ago. I'm waiting to install the 3D front lip and have been saving up for DP and JB 4....

246 (605hp) I feel you, man. I just bought this pass for 535xdrive on Monday and I can't stop thinking about all the mods I need to do. I had my tint installed yesterday. I rode 50% front and 20% rear and rear. Next come the wheels. Not sure what yet, but this mod thing you're talking about is a disease lol

Profexxor (282hp) Hey, is anyone tired of this floating boat ride? Or is it just me? I want to try the JB4 but the car can't handle the stock power it has now, the body roll is almost scary. 191993 (655hp) I'm thinking about ordering an OEM Mtech bumper. Can we say with certainty that the equipment is just right? I'm asking because I'm thinking about just sending the bumper in to be painted and not having the shop fit it and install it to save money. I would like to do it all myself. And also, I want to leave the bumper removed for a few weeks to allow the paint to fully cure before I can apply clear vinyl. What do you all mean??

04071990 (185hp) Installation on my OEM M Sport bumpers front and rear was perfect. If you upgrade from the base version to the M-Sport version, you will need some additional parts. Plan to purchase a pre-built kit like the one from getbmwparts.com??

pantera69 (805hp) My car is a '13 550i and has about 8,000 miles on it and suddenly the roof fin is leaking water all over the back seat into the car! I'm curious if any of you have had this problem? I like the car a lot, but for the money I paid I'm sure I'll have a lot of problems! Not to make light of it, but I have owned 4 Benzes and currently own 2 and have never had a single problem like I did with my Bimmer! I'm not sure what to think about BMW anymore, and every time a stupid problem comes up with this car that has nothing to do with me or its driving, it sits in the shop for a week or two while I still pay a lease payment and drive a 3-series rental car!? Any advice???

1066 (567hp) I've been driving BMWs since 1985 and have never had a leak or major problem. Your 2013 model year is still under warranty - take it back to the dealer.

fanatik (519hp) Shark fin is not sealed properly. Has anyone taken it off for some reason? Did you have your roof wrapped or something similar? If not, I would bring it in to have it sealed and replace your back seat that has suffered water damage.

I'm not sure if it could be loose, but the water got in where the third brake light is and got on the back of the seat! Why should I have them replace the seat??

199221 (582hp) Why is Jet Black not available on the Build Your Own website for the F10 M?5?

BM-Larry (277hp) No... too bad. All my BMWs have been jet black... I guess I'll never buy an M5. That said, you can go matte...but I'm not a fan of maintaining it or looking it under any circumstances. Jet black is really my favorite color for a BMW sedan: deep, dark and pure black. Sapphire is fine, but due to the metallic parts it is noticeably grayer in comparison.

l0vey0u (824hp) Mine had a leak in the same place, which was due to the antenna. Why did it leak? Viggsdesign did a semi-shitty job when they wrapped my roof and didn't seal the antenna properly. Water got in and also damaged my nappa leather seats. Luckily that was on my 2013 535, not the current car. Alan

kanz_min (310hp) I guess because they say so, just like you can't get sapphire crystal on a 5 Series M Sport! Definitely sportier, but much larger PITA (I have it in my weekend car). Unless you see them side by side, it's hard to tell the difference. I'm getting a jet black 550 next week and I'm already worried about it. I would have much preferred sapphire like my current X5.

550Reasons (780hp) Alan told me about his mishap with his antenna and when I had my roof packed up I made sure they resealed it pretty well. They used some of the black sealant that I use to seal the windshields (at first it was just double-sided tape, but I had it redone). I agree that this problem shouldn't occur on a brand new car, but it seems like an easy fix. I would take it to the dealer and have it repaired there. Make a fuss about them and try to get something out of them.

I also prefer jet black, but it's not worth the effort for me. I agree that the difference is there, but most people don't know it unless you tell them. From a few meters away it is very subtle. Either way, they don't give us an option... At least without a fee.

cookies6 (470hp) As with most of BMW's efforts, it's certainly the case that JB adoption rates have historically been very low, especially with all of the much more desirable alternative metallic blacks out there. As someone who has owned another Jet Black BMW (2011 335) and now foolishly bought it, he is beyond miserable. The Dark Graphite on my F10 is superior to Jet Black in every way... I hate Jet Black (never again!). At least with the metallic blacks there is a small chance of hiding some of the swirls.

ilovemylif (414hp) Both were only due to option decisions for 3-year lease returns. For example, the 2002 330i Sport that I purchased in 2005 was the only Sport Package MT CPO I could find anywhere at the time. The 2011 335i I purchased in December was the ONLY non-Xi 335 sedan with the cold weather package anywhere on the West Coast (had to have folding rear seats). I ordered both gray cars that I've had since 2000.

peniss (564hp) If you have never disassembled the antenna, it may just be a manufacturing problem. I would just take it to BMW and have them fix it. If you haven't played around, it's clearly a warranty issue.

041181 (282hp) I find it hard to believe that the lack of color is because it is less desirable. The deep, dark black you get with jet black is much sportier than a speckled, sparkly looking sapphire. Most people I've spoken to simply opt for sapphire crystal to keep maintenance low, even if they think it looks a little less sporty and menacing. However, I also find it hard to believe that M5 owners prioritize maintenance over looks. We're talking about a six-figure super sedan here, not a minivan. I would say owners would primarily go for a sporty look. Seems confusing to me. My 550xi MSport is the third deep black BMW for me. I've never had any problems maintaining them. I let them get dirty, then I wash them...simple as that. When they're dirty, they look like any dirty black or dark colored car. However, when they're clean, they look like nothing else... a glassy ocean of black.

Every time I bring my car back they have it a week longer than it should ever last! So slow, I don't know why! So they gave me an appointment for a week later! It is a leasing contract. So if the car breaks down, money is lost! At this point I'm just annoyed with BMW!

290592 (319hp) Is there a way to inform BMW about my problems directly via email? For example, I've only owned the car for 8 months and it's already been to the workshop three times because of workmanship errors!!??

1604 (111hp) It's a strange choice, my BMW. The E39 came with Black Sapphire, but the current F10 M-Sport cannot have this color (although the M5 does). I would have thought, considering how much an M5 costs, you could pick any damn color you wanted! Even though it's not cheap, I think Citrin Black is a very nice color and I would have chosen it if finances permitted.

1elephant (811hp) Quote: Originally written by BMW FOREVER. Why exactly is jet black easier to care for than sapphire black? Both have the same clear coat, so the care should be the same, right? Personally, I put no more effort into maintaining my jet black BMWs than any other colored car I've ever owned. However, because it is a non-metallic paint, it lacks the metallic flecks in the paint that are useful for concealing imperfections such as dust, dirt, and small scratches or swirls. With jet black, it is simply black - nothing else is mixed in. Therefore, nothing else in the paint will help disguise problems. It will look dirtier quicker, scratches will be easier to see, etc. All in all, nothing looks as GREAT as jet black. When it's clean it looks deep, dark and rich. Plus, it's sporty and menacing...whereas metallic colors are a little more glittery and sparkly because the light reflects off all the little metallic parts. Since the metallic parts also reflect light everywhere, it appears less deep and saturated. The way I see it: If you're looking for a jet black color and want something sportier, go with jet black. If you just want a black car and easier maintenance (less frequent washing, less worries about micro-vortices, etc.) is most important to you, get the Sapphire Black. But to the OP's original post, it's confusing why BMW would remove the jet black option from the M5...unless it had something to do with demand, too many other black options, etc. That would be interesting to know.

12011983 (810hp) My car is a '13 550i and has about 8,000 miles on it and suddenly the roof fin is leaking water all over the back seat into the car!

201011 (696hp) In my opinion, Jet Black is the best color for a BMW. One of the best, I only have the one I own now, I'm sure once I get it out of my system I might like their signature blue or alpine white, but dude, jet black projector? Come on. I don't like my black sapphire metallic as much as JB. I can't say it enough, I would definitely order an M5 individually, that's my plan for the next one!

bishop1 (834hp) I've been driving BMWs since 1985 and have never had a leak or major problem. Your 2013 model year is still under warranty - take it back to the dealer.

nascar123 (616hp) Not everyone can cope with the care of deep black paint and not everyone defines a clean, well-preserved paint in the same way. Most people take a JB car into the car wash and to them the car looks perfect/pristine. I'm one of those people who, in certain lighting conditions, would see a semi-clean car with tons of swirl marks all over the car that would drive me crazy. For this reason, some think that maintaining this color is a nightmare, while others see no problem with it at all. I would never buy a JB car unless it's a Garage Queen and I have all the time in the world to keep the paint pristine. If you have OCD when it comes to keeping your paint in pristine condition, JB would take up a lot of your free time lol Alan

mykids5 (329hp) Shark fin is not sealed properly. Has anyone taken it off for some reason? Did you have your roof wrapped or something similar? If not, I would bring it in to have it sealed and replace your back seat that has suffered water damage.

If you have OCD when it comes to keeping your paint in pristine condition, JB would take up a lot of your free time lol Alan Alan – a very fair analysis! I'm driving my third jet black BMW (this color for 13 years) and can therefore confirm all the positive and negative aspects. Swirl traces are much easier to see than with a sapphire black. Additionally, water stains become much more visible if you don't dry your car properly after washing. Yes, this also makes dirt and dust more visible. Basically it will make ANY imperfection stand out more than Sapphire Black. But I keep coming back to it. Why? Because when the car is clean (and done right), there is simply nothing like it. It's breathtaking - like looking into a black ocean or mirror. But I'll put it this way: My car has the advantage of being in the garage more days a week than outside. Since I work from home, the car is not driven every day. It also stays a little cleaner for a longer period of time. Therefore, I agree with your statement that jet black is probably a really bad problem if someone suffers from OCD and gets easily upset by dirt, dust, water stains, etc. and doesn't have time to dedicate to cleaning the car. This time I was so close to going dark gray... I just love how it looks. While the black seduces me in many ways, whether you choose jet black OR sapphire, for me it has another downside: it has the potential to soften the lines and curves of the car. The F10 wears it pretty well... but some cars just look totally muted in black to me.

I'm not sure if it could be loose, but the water got in where the third brake light is and got on the back of the seat! Why should I have them replace the seat??

Tonifyd (150hp) No... too bad. All my BMWs have been jet black... I guess I'll never buy an M5. That said, you can go matte...but I'm not a fan of maintaining it or looking it under any circumstances. Jet black is really my favorite color for a BMW sedan: deep, dark and pure black. Sapphire is fine, but due to the metallic parts it is noticeably grayer in comparison.

hahalol (993hp) Mine had a leak in the same place, which was due to the antenna. Why did it leak? Viggsdesign did a semi-shitty job when they wrapped my roof and didn't seal the antenna properly. Water got in and also damaged my nappa leather seats. Luckily that was on my 2013 535, not the current car. Alan

maryline (804hp) I guess because they say so, just like you can't get sapphire crystal on a 5 Series M Sport! Definitely sportier, but much larger PITA (I have it in my weekend car). prettyboi1 (602hp) Alan told me about his mishap with his antenna and when I had my roof packed up I made sure they resealed it pretty well.

Why didn't you choose Sapphire Black for your new 550? The 5 Series is a work/everyday car. I like to keep it simple, but still black. I wash my jet black 911 every time I use it. I also prefer jet black, but it's not worth the effort for me. I agree that the difference is there, but most people don't know it unless you tell them. From a few meters away it is very subtle. Either way, they don't give us an option... At least without a fee.

It kept the leather saturated for who knows how long and dried it out. The leather was wrinkled and had become a bit hard in this area. TOYOTA (241hp) As with most of BMW's efforts, it's certainly the case that JB adoption rates have historically been very low, especially with all of the much more desirable alternative metallic blacks out there.

550bye (80hp) Both were only due to option decisions for 3-year lease returns. I ordered both gray cars that I've had since 2000.

ana123456 (893hp) If you have never disassembled the antenna, it may just be a manufacturing problem. I would just take it to BMW and have them fix it. If you haven't played around, it's clearly a warranty issue.

photo (677hp) I find it hard to believe that the lack of color is because it is less desirable.
