polar1 (352hp) | I had the chance to test the Asia spec 523i this past weekend. I think the Asian spec 523i is different from the EU spec model because it has a 2.5L engine instead of the 3.0L one in EU. The power rating is the same (204 hp), perhaps because Asian countries tax heavily based on engine displacement, so BMW decided to reduce the engine size. This also likely reduces the weight of the car since its engine is smaller. It seems they have carefully tuned the engine since the 0-100km times are identical to the EU ones. Some background: I'm coming from a 335i M-Sport e90 that I sold about 6 months ago before moving from Japan to Hong Kong. The 335i came fully equipped with iDrive/Nav/ipod/upgraded stereo/active steering/adaptive xenon/M sport package. After debating the 3 series and Audi A4/A5 again, I decided to spend more for luxury than for motor, because in Hong Kong there are no long journeys, no tracks and most of the time will be stuck in traffic jams. In Hong Kong, the trim choices are: 523iA Executive -204HP -8 speed (not sport) -Dakota leather/any paint choice -ipod USB -17 wheel 236 wheel -idrive (no navigation) -power seats 523iA (changes from above) -8 fast sport transmission -hifi speakers -bluetooth -528iA sunroof (changes from above) -258HP -no sunroof -327 535iA wheels (top shifts) -306HP -6dvd changer -550iA sunroof -didn't really look at this one as it was out of my budget The car I drove was a 523i standard with 8 sport speeds (non-executive). Immediately, I noticed that the cabin was much nicer than that of the e9x. Too many little touches to mention, but it seemed closer to the last 7er and a step above even the e60 which I loved. it also has a very high-tech gadget feel, but different from Audis which have too many buttons and are distracting. I expected to be quite disappointed with the 523i since I had driven a 325i and didn't like it much. I was wrong. The 8-speed transmission masks engine faults well up to the legal speed limit. It probably slows down after 100km/h, but how often do you drive there in Hong Kong? I played around with the sport/sport+ setting but to be honest I couldn't tell much probably due to the underpowered engine. The steering is not as tight as the standard e9x, but closer to active steering. I noticed that the feeling in the center wasn't great, but I can get used to it. The suspension was tight like a BMW should be - much better than the original A4/A5 and very close to the e9x, but it feels like a bigger car (but not that heavy). The 523i is a flagship item here and only to order. They have 528i's in stock but they don't have a Sports transmission so I didn't consider them. In the end I ordered a 528i with many options. 4-5 months of waiting... I paid the same price as a base 535i for the 528i, but the options I chose are: -Sophisto Grey/Cinnamon/Anthracite -Navigation Professional -HiFi Professional -Sports seat -Premium Edition (rear camera/soft close trunk/electric rear sunshade) -surround camera view (my wife needs to be able to park the car on the narrow streets of Hong Kong )

030791 (411hp) | Hello, I am choosing between these two without being able to test either of them. I'm leaning toward the 525d but worry about the noise level and vibration traditionally associated with diesel engines (I've driven the E60 520d and I'm certainly not impressed). I've read that the F10 diesels are much more refined, but I would appreciate any real feedback from people who have driven them - although I know that can be subjective. You've also been told that diesel engines generally get noisier after a few years – is there any truth to that? The 523i here comes with the n52 engine and any feedback on its power delivery will be appreciated. THANKS!
|
08111983 (57hp) | I tested 523i and 525d. The 523i needs a lot of revs to drive sportily and has no punch at low revs. The 525d's are solid and have plenty of torque throughout the rev range. bouth tested with 8 speed car. opt for diesel and 8-speed auto.

gateway2000 (441hp) | The F10 520d is significantly improved over the E60 520d. I owned the E60 520d for 2 years and although I was very happy with it, the F10 from my first test drives represents a huge improvement in terms of refinement. Once these cars are cruising, you can't hear what's under the hood anyway. I'm due to take delivery of my new F10 520d in mid-January, so I'm very excited. I lost my E60 520d in a car accident, so I've been without a car for 3 months.

1boricua (758hp) | a quick fix might be to remove yours...and have it sprayed?? It's definitely a cheaper option!

28091992 (831hp) | Has anyone here tried getting their OEM grilles painted gloss black to match the Shadowline trim? If so, how much did it cost? Also, 1hot BMR, what dealer did you get it from that was $129 shipped? I was offered $99 each side at my local dealer..

Do not spray OEM grills as they will chip much more easily than OEM grills - it's not worth it. I got mine from Jason at getBMWparts.com - a BMW dealership in Maryland. I think he is a sponsor here or at bimmerfest.

skate101 (559hp) | According to a post on another forum, someone on this UK forum managed to change their build week to be able to get the new apps option, plus whatever else is available at that time - can -may be a black panel instrument cluster, maybe stop/start. automatic gearbox. What week do we think it will need to be built, and does anyone know which BMW dealer did this??
|
trosch (820hp) | Yes... it's me. I wanted 6nr so I added it to my specs. My car was still mod spec and was due to be built in week 6. In order to get the 6nr they won't build the car now until week 9 when all the 2011 updates hit the production line and it has been mentioned that as a result I could get other 2011 upgrades. (auto shutdown/start, extended black panel, etc.). Although I added 6nr and delayed the build to accommodate this, I think it's "partial" guesswork on my dealer's part as to any other upgrades coming, but for me I Definitely wanted a connected BMW 6nr and am happy to delay delivery for another 3-4 weeks. . Any other improvements that come with it will be a bonus.

1967gto (215hp) | I notice that the top and side view camera is now available for the F10 5 series. Has anyone tried it and is it worth it $800?
|
Maconer98 (862hp) | Top view cameras are very useful when parking in a tight spot or parallel parking. The side view cameras are moderately useful. If you drive a lot around town and/or in places where curbside parking is common, they will help you have a better view when you go out onto the street and reduce the risk of an accident. IMHO that's $800 well spent.
|
060283 (297hp) | It's just a shame that the cameras aren't better protected from road dirt. In winter (wet weather in the UK), vision is almost permanently obscured. Works well when clean

In my humble opinion, that's $800 well spent. Totally agree. In combination with Park Assist it is simply brilliant. I ordered Park Assist with the camera for my wife but I have to admit it's so good I use it myself all the time. The system is right 95% of the time. And thanks to the top view you can follow the progress of the parking maneuver.
