Binge eating disorder, or bulimia, is one of the eating disorders that is characterized by repeated episodes of excessive overeating followed by attempts to control weight through compensatory measures such as binge eating, self-harm, or laxative use. Causes Bulimia disorders can be varied and quite complex, and often involve various factors: biological, psychological, educational, sociocultural, etc. One of the main biological factors associated with bulimia is altered function of the serotonin system. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood, appetite, sleep and other physiological processes. Significantly increasing the amount of food consumed during bulimia can lead to a temporary increase in serotonin levels in the brain, which in turn can lead to a feeling of improved mood. This may explain why people with bulimia often turn to food when they feel stressed or anxious. Additionally, bulimia may have psychological causes. Fear of rejection, low self-esteem and negative body image can increase the risk of bulimia. People with bulimia often experience cyclical episodes of binge eating and depression, which can exacerbate each other. Educational and sociocultural factors can also increase the risk of bulimia. For example, family conflict, feelings of inferiority and dissatisfaction with one's own body can cause compulsive eating. Adherence to a culture of excess, the desire to meet beauty standards and the desire to manage one's weight can trigger bulimia. In general, bulimia has many causes and is often accompanied by complex behavior patterns. Treatment for bulimia may include psychotherapy, medication, and stress and anxiety reduction. However, it is important to understand that bulimia can have serious consequences for health and requires qualified and timely treatment.
