From the author: It seems that we all sometimes face the fact that “tomorrow” we will do everything differently. We try to find the reason in laziness, or lack of time, being very afraid to look inside ourselves and change something. The title of the film "Groundhog Day" takes its roots from the annual American holiday, which is celebrated on February 2. On this day, the groundhog is pulled out of its hole. If he calmly leaves the hole and does not see his shadow, then winter will soon end. Having recently watched the film “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray again, I thought that it could serve as an illustration of the work of a patient and a psychoanalyst. A person isolated from the world comes to the analyst who does not enjoy either relationships or work. Everyone around only prevents him from remaining in this isolation and, because of this, causes severe irritation and an attempt to avoid any close contact. We see a man locked in the fortress of his childhood grievances and experiences, which he desperately does not want to face, but understands that life is passing him by. Each new day is no different from the previous one. Just like a groundhog doesn’t want to leave his hole and doesn’t see the point in the coming of spring. Winter turns out to be an eternity for him. There is no future and there is no past. There is only a dull, gray and cold present, in which he wakes up every day at 6 am. From the very beginning of the film, we see how the hero wants to do a lot in life: try something new in his work, show affection for the girl who I always liked making friends, helping a beggar with money. But something inside him always stops him... It seems that with every new day something can change, but again it’s 6 in the morning and everything is the same. Comparing the story of the main character with the psychoanalytic process, I would divide the film into 3 stages: The main character appears to us in complete denial. He does not want to notice that he lives an empty and limited life every day. Because of the fear of being rejected and experiencing pain, he tries to avoid any closeness with others. He denies and tries to kill the very desire to live differently, unconsciously constantly repeating his gray childhood, deprived of attention and care. Gradually he manages to get a little in touch with the cold winter life in which he is stuck. And then, it seems that by killing yourself, you can kill that part of yourself that is cold and bored every day. There is a strong anger that it is impossible to change the present without coming into contact with the pain of the past. Having experienced a lot of pain and suffering, from which the main character ran and hid all his life, he gradually manages to fill his day with meaning, activities, hobbies and the world of other people. The world around us no longer seems so cold and dangerous, and people are no longer used in it only to satisfy their needs. It seems that we all sometimes face the fact that “tomorrow” we will do everything differently. We try to find the reason in laziness, or lack of time, being very afraid to look inside ourselves and change something. Tonkikh Natalya, psychoanalytic psychotherapist.
