Marsha Linnehan, the founder of the approach, who herself suffered from borderline personality disorder, spent a long time looking for how to help people with such a diagnosis. She describes her experience of BPD briefly and succinctly: “I was in hell.” (Article in the New York Times. Author - Benedict Carey. Translation by Vladimir Snigur.) In the process, Marsha went through a lot of approaches and even spiritual teachings, collected the most effective methods for combating BPD, which together formed Dialectical Behavior Therapy. The uniqueness of this method lies in its comprehensive an approach that consists of skills training, personal consultations, crisis calls and an advisory group of therapists, which provides reliable support to clients (as well as therapists!) and gives a good chance of results even for the most difficult cases. DBT is a special method, for me than - something like practical philosophy. It combines acceptance and change; greater warmth and empathy with clarity and systematicity; caring support for patients is combined with a deep belief that a person can learn to cope with difficulties and build a life worth living. How it works in practice: Skills training takes place weekly. There, practical skills in stress tolerance, emotional regulation, mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness are taught in a supportive atmosphere. Participants share their experiences, check homework and try out their skills. Individual consultations are practically ordinary psychotherapy, but with a behavioral bias. There we look for the cause of dysfunctional behavior and plan how to correct it. We set goals (after all, everyone has their own life worth living) and together we go towards them. And, of course, we work with trauma, which is usually the root of all problems. Telephone coaching provides support for people in crisis, this is one of the few approaches where a person can count on round-the-clock assistance from specialists. An advisory group of therapists. DBT is teamwork and this is another strong point of the method. Meetings are held weekly. It is accepted that patients are managed by a team: you can always analyze the case, receive professional help and human support. In our team we also read books and go to cafes. :) What else is needed to prevent burnout! The method, which appeared in the late 80s, has been successfully developed and expanded since then. Research is being conducted, and it has now been proven that it works not only with self-harm and suicidal behavior, but also perfectly helps cope with depression, addictions, bipolar disorder, eating disorder, OCD, PTSD and other disorders. This is largely because we are correcting specific behavioral patterns that support the symptoms and are often the cause. This is a wonderful way to cope with yourself and life; a difficult but interesting path to a life worth living. Our team regularly conducts skills training, with a new group starting every month. The interview is free. Each group has budget places for those who are in a difficult life situation.
