To decide if Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is right for you, we've already discussed a few things. What are you hoping to get out of therapy? ?Does the CBT model make sense to you? Is the CBT structure right for you? What problems have you encountered? Having discussed your expectations (1) and your understanding of the CBT model (2), in this article we will look at other characteristics of the therapy.3. Is the CBT framework right for you? As we have discussed in previous articles, CBT is focused on your goals and changes. To make progress, you need to use some structure. Instead of perceiving a psychologist as an expert, or even more so a guru who can “fix” something for you, we will work together on the problem. You bring your knowledge about yourself and your life; the psychologist has knowledge and experience in CBT. Therapy is limited in time, and in most cases does not exceed a few weeks, as the idea is that you gradually gain the necessary knowledge and skills in order to use them yourself. This will likely require some time and effort on your part between sessions, such as reading or taking notes, or learning new behavioral strategies and putting into practice what you learned during therapy. After a pre-agreed number of sessions, we review the interim results of therapy to ensure its effectiveness. In addition, at the beginning of each meeting, we discuss the session plan together in order to make the most of the available time. Of course, sometimes unforeseen situations arise during a session that will require attention and changes to the original plan. At the end of the session, you will have the opportunity to express how you think this meeting was useful and share your impressions. This is so we can both have a clear understanding of what works for you and what doesn't. So if you prefer a more free-spirited style, you may not feel as comfortable with CBT. If, on the other hand, you want therapy to focus on changes in your life, and you are willing to work on this with your psychologist, CBT can really help you with this.
