I deliberately did not call the article “How to force yourself to do something”, because I already wrote: in the vast majority of cases it does not work. You can scold yourself with whatever last words you like, call yourself a rag and shame you for procrastination, it won’t budge you. You will only be offended by yourself, then you will be upset that you are so bad, and then decide not to do anything at all, since you are so bad. What will help you start doing something? Don’t fight with yourself, but do it on the sly. It’s a very strange proposal, but it really works. I always listen carefully to the internal dialogue and understand perfectly well who is whining and doesn’t want to do anything inside me. This is an Inner rebellious child, whose main task is to sabotage in every possible way the doing of what is necessary and useful. He is the main opponent of the Inner Parent and even the Inner Adult. And he is practically invincible if you start a fight with him, because he has a lot of energy. So I prudently do not enter into a fight with him. I assent to him in every possible way: “Yes, how badly I don’t want to do anything, I’m just lazy, and who even came up with the idea of washing/cooking/going to work,” and at this time I just go and do what I don’t seem to want to do - purely on the energy of the Inner Adult. This is how I support the Inner Child in a unique way, do not devalue it, but do what is important to me. The key here is the understanding that this is really important to me. What is not important to me, I do not want to do. And it’s easier to do what’s important to me, even if I don’t feel like it. Turning what you’re too lazy to do into habits The easiest way is to do what has become a habit. In this case, a trigger works for you: as soon as you sit down somewhere, find yourself somewhere, and so on, you immediately begin to do what you have trained yourself to do, simply automatically. This is how I trained myself to train foreign languages. I often use trains, and at the beginning of each trip I began to open the application and repeat foreign words. Now I do it without even thinking, automatically. As soon as I get on the train, my hand reaches for the phone, and I open the application. But how to develop this habit? The next point is about this. Just one minute. The easiest thing to make a habit is something that does not take much time. That's why morning exercises should be short (at least at first), and language training should be accessible within a couple of finger movements. Besides, such things need to be tied to something else. We tie exercise and brushing teeth to waking up, I tied tongues to the train, reading professional literature can be tied to a trip on the subway, and listening to podcasts to a trip behind the wheel. The most important thing is that at first, until the reflex is developed, it should take literally a couple of minutes. The same phrase - “Let's just do this for a minute” - can be used to persuade yourself to start something today. This is exactly how we persuade children - just try to start, because we know: once you start, you can get involved, and after that it will be much easier to continue. Do as you like. Find a suitable way that you like, to do what is useful and important. If it’s sports, don’t force yourself to go to the gym and lift weights, because everyone does it. Take up dancing, cycling, start playing tennis if that's what you like best. You'll see, in this case, the sport will cause you much less resistance. If we are talking about languages, train them the way you like. Some people prefer watching TV series with subtitles, others like to translate songs of their favorite artists, others prefer apps - and there are so many of them that everyone is sure to find something to their liking. But it will be easier to do this if you really like the language. Rest If you do not allow yourself to rest, if you are not satisfied with days of doing nothing, if you do not allow yourself at least once to spontaneously refuse to do what you have planned to do, your resistance to.
