Each of us faces internal barriers from time to time. This could be fear of a new project, lack of self-confidence, or simply a desire to avoid the unknown. Psychological resistance is the reaction of our psyche to new internal changes and external events. Almost each of us faces this phenomenon, so understanding its essence is of great importance. This process is closely related to psychological defense mechanisms. Let's say, at the level of logic, you understand that a certain change can benefit your life. However, your subconscious mind may perceive this change as a threat, since newness is often associated with uncertainty and potential danger. It is this fear that activates defense mechanisms and causes resistance to change. But what if I told you that you already have all the tools to overcome this resistance? STEP 1. Be aware of your resistance. First of all, it is important to recognize that you have internal resistance. Remember that time when you decided to go in for sports, but in the evening you were “unexpectedly” tired? Or when you decided to make a change in your career, but each time you postponed this step until later? This is it. Example: Client X could not decide for a long time to enroll in English courses. She felt like she was “too old” for learning new things or that she didn’t have enough time. STEP 2. Understand the reason for resistance. Example: Client E. always avoided discussions and arguments for fear of saying something wrong or facing criticism. However, after she realized her fear, Elena decided to devote time to studying current topics in order to feel more confident in discussions. This allowed her not only to overcome her fear, but also to become a more knowledgeable and confident participant in discussions. STEP 4. Take it one step at a time. Don’t try to overcome all the resistance at once. Break the process into small steps and move forward gradually. Example: Vera wanted to start running in the morning. Instead of running a 5K all at once, she started with 10-minute runs, gradually increasing the distance. STEP 5: Celebrate your successes. Each milestone completed is a reason to be proud. Don't forget to reward yourself for the results you achieve. This is maintaining your new behavior scenario based on a revised worldview.
