From the author: Abortion is a serious psychological trauma for any woman and deciding on it is a serious psychological problem. It is necessary not to dissuade a woman, but to help her decide on her priorities. The demographic policy of the Russian Federation, approved by Presidential Decree No. 1351 of October 9, 2007, aimed at preserving reproductive health, reducing the mortality rate, increasing the birth rate and life expectancy of the population, also affected the staffing standards of medical institutions. There is now a position of a medical psychologist in antenatal clinics. The duties of a psychologist include mandatory psychological counseling for every woman who applies for a referral for an abortion. The position of both the gynecologist and the psychologist is “for maintaining the pregnancy.” So why is a woman who comes for an abortion referred for consultation to a psychologist? If you are thinking about dissuading - no, not dissuading, but helping the woman increase her awareness of the situation, because many of those who decide to have an abortion do it unconsciously. An unplanned pregnancy is always a shock for a woman, even in the family, not to mention young unmarried girls. Someone decides to have an abortion because of their youth, because of a damaged relationship with a partner, out of ignorance of the consequences, someone because of momentary circumstances, under external pressure, because of other plans, because of a lack of understanding of the value of life, and sometimes just out of stupidity. But there is almost never only one problem; the decision to terminate a pregnancy is the tip of the iceberg. The psychologist’s task is to reveal the main painful point, the reason that leads a woman to this decision. The main problem of counseling such women is that, as a rule, these women are not true clients, they are “unmotivated.” Therefore, the doctor refers the woman to a psychologist. He refers her almost by force, motivating her by the fact that according to the law, she must undergo a consultation with a psychologist, and also, she can receive a referral for termination only 7 days after the application (the same according to the law, these 7 days are given for reflection). So this is a situation for a woman where both a doctor and a psychologist are allegedly trying to dissuade her, and the state is preventing her from making her personal decision. And the woman, with all her appearance and behavior during the consultation, expresses protest, sometimes hostility, and even a demonstrative refusal to discuss her decision. “Why do I need a psychologist? Why should I discuss my decision with anyone? I am an adult, I have thought and weighed everything, I don’t need any more arguments, I don’t need to be dissuaded. I’m in a hurry, I don’t have time, I need to go to work, pick up my child, and somewhere else. Give me a quick note that we talked, and I’ll go. That’s it, I’ve already made a decision!” says the woman, standing in the doorway of my office and afraid to cross the threshold. Therefore, the first task of the psychologist is to try to overcome the natural resistance of the “untrue”, “unmotivated” client and do everything possible so that she takes the position of the true one. Therefore, it is very important in what form a specific proposal for consultation will be made to a specific woman. For many years in our state, the following model of attitude towards unplanned pregnancy has been formed in the minds of women: “This is my body, this is my pregnancy, and only I have the right to decide Should I be pregnant or not!” For some women, especially young women who have not yet had the experience of motherhood, this is not yet a child, not a person, not even an embryo, but simply an unplanned fact. Many women in the early stages consider the unborn child just a particle, a piece of their body, and if I don’t want this piece of flesh, then I’ll go and get rid of it, cut it out, like appendicitis, for example. So the task of a psychologist is precisely to not to dissuade “cutting out an unnecessary fact”, but to ensure that the woman herself understands the reason and motive for her decision, which.
