Nightmares are repressed instinctive and behavioral tendencies, that is, our needs that we do not want to recognize and behavior that we condemn in ourselves and try to justify at least in our own eyes. Nightmares indicate a breakthrough from the unconscious of some quality that we do not accept in our lives for various reasons (for example, we are afraid of condemnation, we are ashamed to talk about it, we are afraid of punishment, we fall in our own eyes, etc., etc. ) Often in a dream we can be chased by monsters, monsters, witches and all sorts of evil spirits. So, aspects of our “I”, our personality, are chasing us. And, most often, we try with all our might to wake up - this is our unconscious way out of a dream (and in reality, an escape from solving the problem). If we were unable to stop in a dream and face our enemy (monster, witch, monster), then you can do this during the day: remember the dream, return to it and imagine that a terrible monster is running after you. You don’t see him, but you feel his proximity, his breath behind your back. Stop and turn around. Look at him. It often happens (in a psychotherapeutic session using the symboldrama method based on “The Creature at the Edge of the Forest”) that the monster runs up and says: “Let’s be friends.” This means that a person is literally running away from himself. Therefore, any dreams are healing, including nightmares. But such work (ending nightmares) already applies to working with a psychotherapist, because Working through dreams (and especially memorable and frightening ones) requires certain psychotherapeutic techniques. In some cases (from personal psychotherapeutic practice using the symboldrama method), patients/clients tend to quickly attack a hostile symbolic being. This tendency reflects a tendency towards auto-aggression, when aggression is directed against oneself (the patient/client), or more precisely, against the part of his personality that is affected. A person has been “developing” such suppression of his own “pressing” impulses for quite a long time in his neurotic behavior. And this no longer speaks of “it’s interesting to find out what the dream is about,” but of an indication for the treatment of a neurotic state, and especially if nightmare dreams often “overwhelm” and do not give rest during wakefulness (i.e. during the day). In the book I .L. Obukhova "SYMBOLDRAMA introduction to the main stage" describes the stages of development of symboldrama and details the dates of experimental research (you can get acquainted if you wish). H. Leiner (the founder of symboldrama) for many years headed the psychotherapy department at the psychiatric clinic of the University of Göttingen in Germany. He developed techniques for psychotherapeutic work with symbolic beings. H. Leiner suggests using the director's principle of active dreaming in reality. The basis of symboldrama is fantasy in the form of images on a free theme (motive) or given by a psychotherapist. The same method can be used to “deal” with nightmares. The psychotherapist performs an accompanying function during a psychotherapy session. At the end of the session, some issues are discussed and the patient/client receives homework (draw a picture about the session and write a session protocol). The next session takes place as a psychoanalytic analysis of the drawing and protocol (if the person wrote, which patients/clients often do not do). We can stop here, because I tried to convey the most important thing about the essence of the matter in simple language. Let's summarize our article. In summary, if a dream continues to remind you of itself, or you wake up and think about it all day (and sometimes a whole year), then this means that you need to change something in yourself and the dream warns you about this. The best option, of course, is to go to a psychologist who works with dream analysis and deal with your monsters. If you found the information interesting or useful in some way, you can use the “thank you” function. Thank you in advance.
