From the author: An article about procrastination of a healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition and weight loss. Contains some recommendations and provides support. As a person who has been more or less successfully fighting excess weight all my life, I know the problem of eating disorders from the inside. Whenever I talk about my difficulties with weight in a circle of familiar or not so familiar people (psychologists gradually get used to talking about important things in a circle of semi-familiar people, don’t think it strange)), there are one or two people who begin to passionately explain to me: “yes, you just need a good nutritionist” or “you need to take classes with an individual fitness trainer.” And this is surprising, they usually don’t talk about this, and people who have never suffered from such difficulties believe that the main thing is to tell us how to act, and we will all immediately begin to lose weight. It seems that this point of view is secretly based on the opinion that overweight people are just stupid and don’t know why they get fat, and what will help them lose weight) You will be surprised, but many overweight people are simply a walking library of knowledge regarding the calorie content of foods, nutrition rules, and exercise promoting weight loss and even their correct alternation and combination, various kinds (10 - 15 pieces at least) diets. Many of us (overweight people) have exercise equipment at home, subscriptions to a fitness club, a constant set of healthy foods at home, and every Monday we are ready to start all this. Since we are no longer 16 - 20 years old, when it still seems to us that there may be a problem solved by a week-to-month fast, since we stopped looking for a “magic pill” (an unusual way to lose weight without straining, like “work through childhood grievances and everything will pass” or “build up psychological defense and you won’t need fat”, etc.) we we know a lot and, to one degree or another, humbly understand that it won’t work out once and for all, that understanding what helps the body lose weight does not help us start doing it. Even if we really work through all sorts of psychological problems, everything doesn’t fall into place right away will become. Unless, of course, we are talking about excess weight up to 10 kg. What really stops us is the memory of the discomfort associated with the diet, the fear of losing support in the form of tasty, sweet, pleasant food (this can even be scary, because then it is not clear what will calm mental stress if not food), fear of losing the established comfort of life, fear that there is “not enough strength” for all this, etc. This kind of “treading on the threshold,” holding oneself back from taking action and starting to lose weight is also a kind of procrastination, putting action on the back burner. It happens that a person says: “the holidays will pass, then....”, “I’ll finish the project then, but I can’t now,” “now is just not the right moment...”. Doesn’t it really sound like “I’ll start on Monday”? Such procrastination is associated with a collision of all the experiences described above, and you can get out of this tangle by deciding to work on postponing weight loss. Each of the fears will need to find a counterbalance, important support, so that clarity appears. There is a good calm and support for every anxiety. Then it will be possible to act with some courage and without being afraid of the excitement associated with change. This kind of work will be work specifically with weight loss procrastination. It would be nice to add support in adapting to new conditions. For changes to occur, all those needs that were satisfied with the help of food must find other ways to be satisfied. And food can replace a lot: a feeling of warmth and security, symbolize the joy of freedom and success, sweet intimacy and tenderness, calm and comfort, etc. etc. Some of us can only feel through food all the freedom in life that is lacking in our relationships with the world. Enjoying food - we are ballerinas, astronauts, we are beautiful, we own this world, we can do anything. While things in life may not work out at all,).
