In the age of the Internet, when anyone, long before visiting a specialist, has the opportunity to check the Internet and make a “diagnosis” for themselves, even young teenagers often contact hotlines with the words “I’m depressed,” and at face-to-face appointments, parents and adult clients confidently ask a specialist to relieve anxiety. In practice, in the process of clarification, it turns out within an hour that in one case there is a state of anxiety that is off the charts and requires help, and what is called anxiety in fact turns out to be depression or both. Let’s briefly consider what explains that the anxiety/depression combination is a common and not always easily differentiated condition and why it is so important for a specialist to deal with this. One of the reasons why the distinction between anxiety and depression is so difficult is the difficulty of identifying feelings and emotions. You can often hear from a person: “I feel bad - I’m depressed,” and it is very difficult to explain what lies behind this to a person who does not have experience in self-observation. If a person encounters some phenomenon often, then it will not be any problem for him to identify it, but if not, everything is very difficult. An example that is far from psychology: if you ask a person who does not cook himself and does not participate in the process of cooking what the soup consists of, most likely he will easily name approximate ingredients - he ate them. If you ask the same question to a chef, what will need to be clarified will most likely be a long list, and the ingredients may end up being completely different. The situation is similar with the identification of feelings. If the initial “I feel bad” contains resentment, there may be a mixture of grief, disappointment and anger inside, if guilt, there may be fear, shame, anger and grief inside. In other words, there are countless different options for “bad”. In addition, due to the complexity of identification, some concepts are easily replaced by others based on experience, and the result of self-diagnosis can differ greatly from reality. Recognizing feelings and emotions is not an easy process, and the identification of the problem and ways to solve it will depend on the significance of each component. It's not always easy to do this yourself. Often depression itself causes anxiety. A depressed person experiences a whole cascade of negative feelings: melancholy, powerlessness, sadness, despair and others. Depression, while affecting all aspects of your life, will often cause you to worry about how these feelings affect your sense of self. Depression will interfere with your work and personal life, and the thought that it may always be this way and nothing good will ever happen can cause great anxiety. In some cases, anxiety leads to depression. As in the situation described above, we are talking about their mutual influence. For a person with a social disorder, or, for example, serious phobias, these disorders will most likely greatly interfere with both their personal and professional life. Depending on the degree of significance for a person of the consequences of the influence of disorders on key areas of life for a given person, disorders associated with anxiety can further demoralize a person and, as a result, lead to depression. In this situation, it will be important to work with depression, but also with high anxiety as the root cause. In addition to the specific reasons that affect anxiety and depression, they have one common cause - a feeling of inferiority. If a person has been in a stressful situation for a long time and resolving it seems impossible for the person, shame due to the inability to cope with oneself and the situation and despondency can lead to feelings of inferiority and the appearance of anxiety disorders and depression. In most cases, “I feel bad” covers a whole range of feelings, and not just one. For a specialist, it will be important what exactly dominates the picture and is the root cause. It is in order to figure out where the root cause is that it is important to contact a specialist. To understand what the problem is.
