A psychotherapist is...? Many people perceive psychotherapy as an educational process. It’s as if you come to a wise, all-knowing person, talk about your problems, and he kisses you on the forehead, pats you on the head and gives you candy - a ready-made solution to all troubles.🍭💫 No, it doesn’t work like that. A psychotherapist is not a mother who will feel sorry, wipe away your tears and blow where it hurts. A therapist is not a dad who will take a belt and spank your butt. He has no wise advice for you, no casual joke or exciting life story. ☝All because there is no such function that a person can push onto a psychologist. Kissing, encouraging, threatening with your finger and butt is only your task. Although it sounds, of course, very tempting to shift all your responsibility onto someone else. And on occasion it seems to have nothing to do with it. It’s like, “It was the therapist who told me to quit my job! It’s his fault that I have nothing to eat!” ❗A person makes his own decision. And he himself is responsible for it. The psychotherapist only accompanies, guides and supports the client while he learns to hear himself, make decisions and take responsibility. I really liked the comparison “psychotherapist - client”, like “instructor - tourist”. The first one has a map, a first aid kit, a rescue phone number, and survival experience. You shouldn't like the instructor, you shouldn't be like him, you shouldn't want to live like him, you shouldn't please him or be afraid of upsetting him. He can only help you figure out where you are now, and from all the variety, help you choose the most interesting route for you. But the decision is always up to the client. For example, I very often know which way and where a client can be taken quickly and dragged there almost by force. And perhaps he will be fine there. But this will not be his life, but mine! Not his choice, but mine! All a therapist owes you is to be there for you on your journey of change. Support your choice. And insure where it is difficult for you. Psychotherapy is not the relationship between a good parent and an unreasonable child. A psychotherapist is a person who sees what you don't have. And it supports you on your way to the place where you can find this “no”. Do you want your work/profession to bring pleasure to you and your child?
